What are some of the top growing pains (joys) of Open Source Software / Open communities? I listed the top ones I've encountered across many organizations. What is missing? We all hear that voting is important, but it can be easy to feel discouraged and forget the true significance of your participation in elections. Voting is essential because it pushes a country's democracy to function in a fair and equal way. The whole point of a democracy is to ensure that everyone has their chance to elect a candidate and vote for policies that represent and benefit their communities. Part of community impact is engaging in the civic life of communities, and that starts with electing national and local leaders. Holding elections hinges on the help of volunteers, so this area is one that’s ripe for employee involvement. 1. Employee engagement. Your employees are already aware of and talking about political issues in the headlines, particularly in a presidential year. Creating a civic engagement program gives them the appropriate avenues to do this during working hours. 2. Millennial appeal. While employees of all generations may be attracted to election volunteering, millennials are particularly interested in connecting with their peers. Participating in local elections creates an opportunity to build upon their social networks through the banner of your company. 3. Leadership and skills building. Getting involved in civic life affords myriad opportunities for personal and professional development. Companies often shell out hundreds if not thousands of dollars per employee for the same kind of leadership training and skills building that you can replicate for free through volunteering as a poll worker. 4. Community building. You know that your employees are your best brand ambassadors. Encouraging them to engage in the community in ways that they’re passionate about helps bridge relationships that can connect back to your company in unexpected ways. Diversity in IT: A Reflection of Our World The tech industry thrives on innovation, and diversity is its backbone. Women, with their unique viewpoints, problem-solving skills, and ability to communicate, are key to this innovation. Their contribution makes tech solutions better and more inclusive. A recent discussion on Reddit highlighted a pressing issue: a team leader's discomfort with a female colleague joining the team. This situation reminds us that despite progress, challenges remain. Studies, like those from the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Science Advances, show that companies with diverse leadership are more successful and mixed-gender teams produce stronger scientific research. But diversity isn't just about hiring. It's about making everyone feel welcome and valued. This means reaching out, holding events to introduce women and minorities to our companies, and making joining us easy and appealing. I dream of an IT world as diverse as our society. A place where everyone is represented, feels safe, and has equal opportunities. To achieve this, leaders in tech must actively promote diversity, not only by building diverse teams but also by fostering an environment where every voice is heard and valued. A recent survey of Indigenous IT workers revealed that over 58% of our people are facing discrimination right where they work. Imagine feeling the need to hide who you are just to 'fit in' at your job. That's the daily struggle for many Indigenous workers in tech. What's more, it seems like the path to leadership is filled with invisible barriers for us. A whopping 62% of our community members believe that just being Indigenous puts a halt to their career advancement. And when it comes to seeing Indigenous faces in C-suite positions? Almost nonexistent. This isn't just disappointing; it's a call to action. We need to rally together, push for change, and make sure our voices are heard loud and clear. The tech industry must open its doors wider, ensuring fairness and opportunity for all, regardless of background. We've got work to do, and it starts with acknowledging these truths and working towards a truly inclusive industry. Let's make it happen.
