As California’s wildfires rage on, it’s hard not to feel the weight of how deeply these crises affect us—homes lost, businesses disrupted, and communities struggling to breathe amidst the smoke. For many, it’s not just about property—it’s about protecting loved ones, coworkers, and patients who rely on us. In moments like these, organizations have a chance to make a difference. Whether you’re running a hospital, a business, or a local government, ensuring timely communication and actionable information can save lives. Let’s not wait until the next crisis to ask ourselves: 🟢 Are we equipped to alert our teams in time? 🟢 Do we have plans to keep people safe during evacuations or hazardous air quality days? Disasters test our systems, but they also test our humanity. Together, we can prepare better, respond faster, and care more. #WildfirePreparedness #CrisisResponse #CommunitySafety https://lnkd.in/eThAeyDt

This week we're seeing devastation across the West Coast caused by the deadly California wildfires -- in a wildfire season that is getting progressively longer each year. Our hearts are with the communities impacted. Working in the adaptation space, it's becoming clearer that these types of disasters are interconnected. Experts are saying that last year's atmospheric rivers, combined with record drought and heavy winds, had a huge impact on the wildfires that these communities are now struggling with. We don't need to draw a direct line from one disaster to the next to understand that proactive resilience policy should take into account the way disasters can overlap and cause loss and absolute devastation of whole communities. With disasters becoming stronger and more frequent, we need to radically transform adaptation policy to ensure communities are better prepared year round. https://lnkd.in/eGcyeZwb

The devastating fires have me thinking about how important it is that we all take steps to prepare for such unthinkable events such as these fires. In terms of fires, if you live in the Western United States (and other parts of the US, Canada, and the world) you likely live in wildfire country. And what used be called wildfire season has now become a yearlong season for the Western US. We need to better prepare our communities to take steps to mitigate the possible damages from wildfire as well as prepare to respond. Today I want to think about evacuation. The Emergency Management world has gotten much better at communicating about evacuations and transmitting those communications through text messaging. But have we done our job at giving our communities the know how to respond. Here are some things I've been thinking about. It is too late to start thinking about how to evacuate when the orders come. It is even too late when the fires start. Right now, if you live in wildfire country you need to 1. Make a plan, 2. Make a "kit" or a "Go Bag" and 3. Communicate to your family how to implement the plan. I'll go a little more in depth on each of these in separate posts. Keep good thoughts for our friends and families in SoCal.
Our hearts are with California 💔 Sending our deepest condolences to everyone affected by the California wildfires. #uofuceph #rmhpceph #emergencypublichealth

Fires in California today. California is once again battling devastating wildfires, with the recent outbreaks of the Palisades and Eaton fires causing widespread destruction and chaos. These blazes have already claimed at least 25 lives and have forced thousands of families to evacuate their homes. Firefighters are working tirelessly around the clock to combat the infernos, but strong winds and dry conditions continue to fuel the flames, making containment efforts challenging. The California wildfires have already consumed over 37,000 acres, reducing homes, forests, and businesses to ash. https://lnkd.in/gwwieEm5

Alberta stands with California during this challenging time. Today, we dispatched 40 skilled wildland firefighters to assist in combating the devastating wildfires affecting the state. In 2023, California supported us during one of our worst wildfire seasons on record; now it’s our turn to help our neighbors in need.
