Including an award-winning maritime museum, and a café, Mizen Head boasts an unforgettable day! Sitting on the #WildAtlanticWay, Mizen Head is the most southernly point of mainland Ireland, boasting incredible scenery, and a vibrant history. The signal station at the edge of Mizen Head. This station was strategically significant for vessels voyaging across the Atlantic, housing the first radio beacon in Ireland, installed in 1931. This ensured effective communications were in-place to guide transatlantic routes away from the imposing rugged coastline. For many seafarers, Mizen Head was the last glimpse of Europe before they set off on their journeys. The signal station is approximately a 10-minute walk from the museum and café, leading to the scenic bridge which allows you to cross over the deep chasm between the tip of the peninsula, and the rest of the head. Before the bridge, 99 steps will slowly reveal the landscape, where you get to experience the beauty of Mizen Head from the series of paths and viewing platforms on the way!
