On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and opportunity. Dr. King’s vision inspires us to challenge the status quo and ensure every voice is heard and valued. Dr. King often spoke of economic justice as integral to achieving racial equality. In his “The Other America” speech, he emphasized that true equality requires economic opportunities, including access to meaningful work and livable wages. Through the Poor People’s Campaign, he demanded fair wages, better job opportunities, and affordable housing, viewing economic empowerment as the next phase of the civil rights movement. He believed that addressing poverty and economic inequality was just as crucial as ending segregation. At JBRF, we carry this legacy forward by advocating for Black women by providing the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive. As Dr. King did, we believe workforce development can be a powerful tool to dismantle systemic barriers, unite communities, and restore dignity through economic empowerment. Today, we renew our dedication to this mission. By advancing workforce development, championing health equity, and empowering Black women, we continue the work Dr. King began—building a future where opportunity is not limited by race, gender, or geography. #MLKDay #EconomicJustice #EmpowerBlackWomen #JBRF

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day Amid a Critical Moment for Equality Today, as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we find ourselves reflecting deeply on his call to action: “The time is always right to do what is right.” Dr. King’s pursuit of justice and equality continues to resonate powerfully, especially as we navigate a political climate that threatens the progress we’ve fought so hard to achieve. On this historic day, we also witness the inauguration of a president whose administration has signaled a rollback of critical advancements for women and communities of color. Yet, we remain steadfast, inspired by the resilience and leadership of Black women who continue to carry the torch of justice. Leaders like Michelle Obama, who has chosen not to attend the inauguration, remind us of the strength it takes to stand firm in our values. Our Founder and CEO, Julie Castro Abrams, powerfully articulates the urgency of this moment: “This is not ‘feel good’ work; this is URGENT work. Women are on the line. Our lives are on the line. All of these institutions are now going to be closing out their DEI and women’s ERG groups, and this inauguration is opening the door to much more.” Julie’s words are a clarion call to action. As Dr. King taught us, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” It is our duty to not only protect the progress we’ve made but to continue to elevate the voices and leadership of women, especially Black women, who have been at the forefront of every civil rights movement in history. We applaud the Black women leaders in our community and beyond who are standing firm in the fight for equity, leading the charge in DEI, and driving systemic change across every industry. Their unwavering commitment to justice inspires all of us to keep pushing forward, even when the path is steep. At How Women Lead, we will honor Dr. King’s legacy not just with words, but with actions that support and uplift women leaders, advance equality, and ensure that every woman’s voice is heard. Let us all recommit to this work—because the time to act is now. #MartinLutherKingJrDay #LeadershipMatters #EqualityForAll #HowWomenLead

Yesterday marked both MLK Day and a major transition in our nation's leadership. Today, we're reflecting on what this means for our community and the work ahead. As our President and CEO Kerry-Ann Royes, M.B.A. shared in our weekly newsletter, we carry our mission forward into these next 4 years and beyond: "While yesterday was not the first time Martin Luther King Jr. Day has fallen on a presidential Inauguration Day, it may have been the most polarizing one in history. But I believe the ability to honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on this day was gift — a reminder of the greater good of unity and the formidable drive of the human spirit toward that goal. At YWCA South Florida, we will always be vigilant towards racism, sexism and xenophobia and their destructive impacts on our community. We take the path of strategic engagement and thoughtful action. In the words of Bernice A. King: 'This is not a time for ignorance. We cannot develop a strategic, love-centered strategy for addressing language and legislation if we are not strategic in our listening and leadership.' YWCA promises to drive unity in our community, while facing the hard work of uprooting injustice and inequity, until the world sees women, girls and people of color the way we do: Equal. Powerful. Unstoppable. Our commitment to eliminating racism and empowering women carries on." #YWCASouthFlorida #Leadership #SocialJustice #CommunityUnity #WomenEmpowerment
