As campaigning for the #UKGeneralElection picks up, I had the privilege to attend a roundtable discussion on protecting Black women in Parliament chaired by the iconic Baroness Doreen Lawrence. A moment in history and hope for a new way forward 🖤🤍 *** Protect Black Women held its inaugural parliamentary roundtable on 14 May 2024 at Portcullis House. The roundtable was chaired by Baroness Doreen Lawrence and attended by the following MPs: Diane Abbott, Dawn Butler MP, Florence Eshalomi, Chi Onwurah, Abena Oppong-Asare MP, Kate Osamor, Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP and Claudia Webbe MP. Founders of the Protect Black Women initiative - Dyann Heward-Mills, Foluke Taylor and Christine Fostvedt-Mills were also present. The founders of Protect Black Women explained that the mission of the initiative is to form an empathetic and empowering support system for Black women in the UK. Protect Black Women facilitated a safe space for attendees to reflect on their experiences of misogyny and racism in professional and personal contexts. Participants discussed the importance of embracing community, self-care and healing practices to counter the effects of misogyny and racism. It was agreed that further work is needed to ensure those in positions of power set the right tone at the top and create safe environments for Black women in Parliament and all places of work. Participants agreed to reconvene on a more regular basis and to continue to support and empower each other and future generations. Your presence, vulnerability, and commitment to this work are exactly what’s needed to drive real, transformative change. By showing up, sharing your stories, and embracing the discomfort of growth, you are truly leading by example. We were guided over the past two nights by Dr. Nikki R. and Karen D. Smith Butler, two incredible Black women leaders who lead with love, compassion, and grace. They not only educated and supported us but reminded us of the urgency of this work. Racism and hate impact each and every one of us—regardless of our skin color—and the cost is something we can no longer ignore. Hearing the stories of the women of RAARE was a powerful reminder that racism has stolen something from each of us, and it’s time to take action. Together, we have the power to advance racial equity and create a world where racism can no longer live.
