At our panel, Leading with Grit and Grace: Women Mentorship, Community, and Advocacy, Carrie Phillips, Ed.D. explored the importance of self-advocacy and empowerment. Whether you're navigating your career or championing your ideas, remember: YOU are your own best advocate. 💪

One pivotal moment in igniting my passion for the causes I care about was through debating. As a student in high school, I was given the opportunity to participate in a debate competition that was set to tackle the overarching issue of the 'big five animals.' I was delighted and passionate. The background research, preparation, the conversations around the issue among us girls, and eventually the whole team traveling to a different part of the county was, to put it simply, thrilling. The moment of truth came and went like a whirlwind and I found myself deeply engaged in conversations on the adverse effects of human-wildlife conflict and how our manner of engagement can lead to long-term solutions. When we emerged the winners of the competition, I was ecstatic, but in that moment I felt something else too. I slowly began to realize that the representation of women in conservation, or society in general, would not be truly representative without commentary and knowledge from both genders. The position is baffling, when you really think about it. As a Kenyan #genz, I have witnessed some evils that I can not even begin to explain. How can a bill or law be enacted without a full understanding of that particular issue? Both genders hold knowledge and experiences vital for the crafting and enforcing of policies. Women's perspectives have the ability to reshape conversations and open new unique windows into societal issues that have sadly gone unaddressed. Discourses that traditionally bar or condemn from entry voices that do not match the societal norm breed a one-sided story. A friend once inquired what radical change would I hope to achieve in the world if I was presented with this power. Automatically, the absence of institutionally silencing voices from participating in meaningful discussions with long-reaching effects has been one of those very concrete objectives. I wish that power to the young woman when it is her time.

Your presence, vulnerability, and commitment to this work are exactly what’s needed to drive real, transformative change. By showing up, sharing your stories, and embracing the discomfort of growth, you are truly leading by example. We were guided over the past two nights by Dr. Nikki R. and Karen D. Smith Butler, two incredible Black women leaders who lead with love, compassion, and grace. They not only educated and supported us but reminded us of the urgency of this work. Racism and hate impact each and every one of us—regardless of our skin color—and the cost is something we can no longer ignore. Hearing the stories of the women of RAARE was a powerful reminder that racism has stolen something from each of us, and it’s time to take action. Together, we have the power to advance racial equity and create a world where racism can no longer live. These last two days were incredible. I knew when God gave me the vision to start the RAARE Woman Collective that this would be the most powerful and unprecedented experience for: 💣Women who were already leaning into their understanding of how racism works. 💣Women who had read all the books, watched all the movies and had completed as much independent study as they could, but didn’t know what to do with any of it 💣Women who are paying attention to the impact that racism has had in their own lives, the relationships that it has stolen, the friendships that it has eviscerated, the grandchildren that you can no longer see, the daughter or son-in-law that is not accepted by other family members 💣Women who are angry and disappointed at the state of affairs regarding race relations in our country, but know better than to lead in their advocacy work with that same anger and disappointment, 💣Women who are hungry for the language and resources to reframe how they realize impact… RAARE connects with women as leaders, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, cousin, community volunteers, best friends…consciousness, curators and influencers. We lift you AND your work wherever you are. We ask you to simply reflect on the spaces and places you already are: your home, your workplace, your community, and start your racial equity advocacy there, where you ostensibly already have critical “know, like and trust” currency. Uplifting white women who have a desire to understand the power they have in just their proximity to other people who, on the topic of racial equity, must be moved. Giving them the language, change management strategies, supportive community, tools, attributes, mindset strengthening and norms,to assure success as an advocate in this most precarious doctrine. And with all of that as foundation, you develop your annual racial equity plan that we support you in executing. Panel Insights on 'The Grab': Exploring Land Conflicts and Human Rights in a Gripping Documentary Last Wednesday, Anthesis and Leigh Day hosted an exclusive screening of “The Grab” at the Barbican Centre – a gripping Apple TV #1 documentary by Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite and the Centre for Investigative Reporting. The film follows award-winning investigative journalist Nate Halverson as he uncovers how the hidden battle over the world’s food and water resources is leaving behind a trail of inequality, loss of livelihood, conflict, and displacement. The event brought together 150+ participants from businesses, investors, and civil society, followed by a panel discussion. Anthesis’ Christie M., senior associate in our human rights team, Brigadier Siachitema, Zambian human rights lawyer, and Nathan Halverson joined forces onstage, with Leigh Day’s Richard Meeran as moderator. Key takeaways: 💡 Climate-driven competition for land and water is fuelling conflicts between local communities and businesses seeking to capitalise on these resources. 💡 Businesses and states must respect community rights through due diligence, access to remedy, and regenerative agriculture, ensuring consent in land acquisition. 💡 While voluntary commitments can inspire meaningful action, mandatory human rights legislation, such as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), are key in driving change. The agenda around the United Nations General Assembly and the Summit of the Future was diverse and intense. Multitudes was present in several events promoted by the United National, international networks such as Women Lead, civil society organizations, governments, and philanthropies. Our participation was focused on presenting evidence from our organization’s ten years of work around digital issues in Latin America, representing a vision from the Global South and defending the need to interconnect digital rights, human rights, and the fight against inequalities.   From our many conversations and discussions, we highlight seven key points for the next cycle. Making our communities safer is no small task, but we can all play a role. It begins by understanding the importance of accountability and communication within our neighborhoods. When we engage in open dialogues about safety, we foster trust and collaboration. Here are a few steps that can lead to meaningful change: 1. Initiate conversations with neighbors about safety concerns and community initiatives. 2. Participate in local forums or community watch programs to stay informed and involved. 3. Share resources and information that can empower others to take action, too. By coming together and sharing our thoughts, we can create a supportive environment that prioritizes everyone’s well-being.
