During #TrusteesWeek a lot of my contacts have been celebrating the amazing work being done by trustees across the sector, but also lamenting the number of charities that have consistent trustee vacancies. 4 out 5 organisations! An Inclusive Boards report from 2022 found that: * 29% of charities have all white boards compared * 51% of charities do not have a woman of the global majority on their board * Only of 16% of trustees are from the global majority. * Women represent 40% of trustees while making up 90% of the workforce * And the average age for a trustee in the UK is 60 years-old So do we have a vacant chair problem or do we have an inclusion problem?? This had me thinking about ways we could do more to open up the role of trustee to feel more accessible to people who might feel like they don’t fit the bill. One year ago, I began volunteering with Everyone Can, a charity doing incredible work empowering people with disabilities through technology and gaming. Seven months ago, I became a trustee. I had no prior experience in such a role but I have so much passion for the charity I knew that would fuel me to make an impact in any way I could. When I took on this responsibility, I had two things I wanted to achieve. 1. Raise the profile of Everyone Can in our local community and among businesses. 2. Focus on fundraising to ensure that the team can continue their life changing work. It’s been the most rewarding journey so far, and I couldn’t have done it without the power of networking. I want to thank Stephanie for introducing me to Steve Price who has gone above and beyond in supporting the charity. After visiting our gaming center, Steve immediately took action and organised an exciting fundraising event. On November 1st, we’ll be hosting a Bandyoake night (karaoke with a live band!) along with a charity auction, all to raise funds for Everyone Can. It’s set to be a fun evening with great people, all for a meaningful cause. 🎤🎶 Tickets are just £10, and proceeds will go to helping Everyone Can continue empowering people with disabilities through innovative tech and gaming experiences. “No sticker for you!”: A uniform trumps the right to wear a rainbow sticker, Tribunal rules "The applicant was a longtime volunteer for Chamberfest, a not-for-profit music charity. While volunteering at an event, he displayed a rainbow sticker on his name badge; his employer asked him to remove the sticker, citing a violation of the Chamberfest dress code, and the applicant ultimately removed it. It was not disputed that the rainbow sticker is a symbol of the 2SLGBTQ2+ community (referred to in the decision as “the community”), nor that the applicant was a member of, and an advocate for, the community. 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟭𝟵/𝟭𝟭/𝟮𝟰, 𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆.  I don't often post on LinkedIn but these are topics that I feel need to be talked about more. The three core themes of International Men's Day are: • Making a positive difference to the wellbeing and lives of men and boys • Raising awareness and/or funds for charities supporting men and boys’ wellbeing • Promoting a positive conversation about men, manhood and masculinity These themes help to address some of the issues affecting men and boys including:  • The high male suicide rate • The challenges faced by boys and men at all stages of education and work including attainment, re-training, stress, redundancy and unemployment • Men’s health (including male cancers), shorter life expectancy, body image and workplace deaths – plus the health impact of Covid-19 • The challenges faced by the most marginalised men and boys in society – for instance, homeless men, boys in care, school excluded boys and the high rate of male deaths in custody • Male victims of violence and crime – for instance, bullying, sexual violence, gang violence, and, those coerced into county lines and other criminal activity • The challenges faced by men as parents, particularly new fathers and separated fathers • Male victims and survivors of sexual abuse, rape, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour-based crime, stalking. online image-abuse, sextortion and modern slavery • Boys with no positive male role models in their lives • The negative portrayal of men, boys and fathers https://lnkd.in/ePdrcihu. https://lnkd.in/edR5g-3U MPs are debating these issues on Thursday 21 November: https://lnkd.in/ezDYq2Tc https://lnkd.in/exshVcjU I urge you to contact your MP asking them to attend and speak in support of the debate: https://lnkd.in/eUW6JE9z #internationalmensday
