A huge thank you to our friends at Cox Enterprises for funding, hosting, and volunteering for the 'Moms Meet & Greet' event in June! Everyone had a wonderful time making new contacts and meeting classmates for the first time! Our 2024 class had the opportunity to engage with SMP alumni and Cox employees and take professional headshots—all hosted at the beautiful Cox Enterprises corporate office in Atlanta, Georgia. Getting On Board's Festival of Trusteeship is well underway! Today's schedule is ram-packed with brilliance. ✨ Personally, I've already picked up a handful of really useful tips that I'll be taking into my own board work. Trusteeship can sometimes feel like an esoteric art with no manual, taking place in a room where you need to be the expert - this week is just the best for picking up practical easy-to-implement advice from people who've been doing it for years. And if you've been thinking of dipping your toe in trusteeship for a while - come to one of the free aspiring trustee sessions and find out more!
We had a brilliant first day of our Festival of Trusteeship yesterday! We kicked off with one of our regular webinars, How to Diversify your Charity Board with diversity expert Sophia Moreau, quick stepped along to our keynote speech from the Charity Commission for England and Wales's Chair Orlando Fraser with questions answered insightfully by their excellent Head of Strategic Policy Holly Riley. Then it was off to learn about how chairs can effectively power share with a brilliant panel chaired by the Association of Chairs charismatic chair Joe Saxton before finishing up with Sapna Marwaha's thoughtful and welcoming session for aspiring trustees on finding your passion and purpose. Learning we gleaned included: 🏆 You can talk up diversity without talking down existing trustees Widening the pool of applicants isn’t about moving current trustees on; it’s about giving them help to bring more people on board. 💬 Communication is key to effective chairing Chairs: Make time to get to know all your board members - meet regularly, ask them questions. In meetings, leave enough time for proper scrutiny and discussion. ⚡ Your lived experience is your superpower It can be a powerful way for you to evidence your passion - your why. It can help you articulate your commitment to a particular cause. Though you should never feel you have to share personal information you're not comfortable sharing. There's plenty more great sessions today, tomorrow and beyond! There's still time to get a weekly pass - you'll get all the recordings across the whole week included. Info in the comments.
