🎉 Happy #MSMEDay! In highlighting the enormous contributions that micro, small and medium-sized enterprises make to our world, today is a big deal for all of us at Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. MSMEs do not operate on an even playing field. If you're a woman setting up a business, you're highly likely to face many more barriers and challenges than your male counterparts. I find the digital landscape, and gender disparities in how entrepreneurs operate within it, to be a particularly shocking example. Last year, we spoke to over 1,100 women entrepreneurs across 81 low and middle income countries about just that. Astoundingly, for nearly half of these women, experiences of online gender-based violence have impacted their business, and for almost one in 10 women these impacts had been severe. Online hate, abuse and harassment is just one of the many challenges women entrepreneurs have to navigate. Despite these, we see time and again the incredible determination, perseverance and success of women entrepreneurs in low and middle income countries, and the massive benefits they generate for their societies. This is often overlooked, but not today! And so, to mark MSME Day, I wanted to share not just one incredible woman's story, but a whole bunch of them. Tech & Media Convergency (TMC) had an honour to be part of the - 2024 BBC Media Action's global research festival, #INSIGHTFUL with the theme "Women in Media" Our CEO, Asha Abinallah gave a presentation with focus on "The Role of Misinformation, Disinformation, Al, and Access to Media for Women in Media". She highlighed on How Misinformation and Disinformation are Associated with Al in regard to Women's representation. The following were the highlights of her presentation; ✴️Al systems often reinforce confirmation bias by curating content based on users' previous interactions. ✴️Al-powered algorithms, particularly on social media platforms, prioritize engagement, often amplifying sensational or misleading content. ✴️Al systems often reinforce confirmation bias by curating content based on users' previous interactions. This technology poses a growing threat to the credibility of legitimate information, thus affecting Information Integrity especially in political or social contexts. #AlJournalism #Media

Great to see the week-long celebration and host of supportive discussions by #WeAreTechWomen for UK Women in Tech Week, happening from October 7th to 11th. In recent reports, one in five women are considering leaving the tech industry, highlighting the need for continued support and progress in DEI conversations within organizations. The Women in Tech Week narrative points out that budget cuts and postponed initiatives are hindering the advancement of women into senior tech roles. With only 21% representation of women in the tech industry and the digital skills gap widening, there is a pressing need to accelerate progress, not regress. 21% is not ok! As a senior woman and leader in tech, I no longer see myself as fortunate but now as indispensable in driving change in the industry. Kindness Intelligence 101: Favour the opening. When you feel like playing defense or shrinking back, pause, breathe and ask for the opening. Because life can be pretty hectic these days, there is a tendency to put your boxing gloves up and go in swinging. We are in anticipation and control mode. The current climate asks you to build your ammo, be fully prepared and strike -whether that's in a meeting, making a new connection or working with your team. But what if you let your defences down and started with an opening? And if you're still wondering what the heck I mean, literally try it right now. Think of any task that you have to do or person you're meeting with and your mind will automatically run a prep list of what you want to say and do. Now. PAUSE. BREATHE. Take a few breaths and Ask for the opening. You'll notice that there are two people or more in a meeting. That you don't have to do it alone and that this is your chance to collaborate (not anticipate with this person). You'll move from fear-based tasking to open communication. Watch how much better this meeting goes. How much better you connect, listen and appreciate the human being you get to chat with. You'll be amazed. So stay open. Life's about to get real good.
