Monday night’s Women Leading Philanthropy Voting Meeting was an inspiring event that left us all in awe of the amazing work and dedication from our three short-listed finalists. Thank you Dr. Amanda Hall, Dr. Camille Hamula and Drs. Mina Niazi and Gudrun Caspar-Bell for giving us a wonderful evening demonstrating the power of WLP and for providing truly compelling reasons to support your projects. Congratulations to Drs. We’re happy to share that Dr. Caspar-Bell and Dr. Niazi are one of the three short-listed applicants competing for the 2024–2025 $100,000 Women Leading Philanthropy (WLP) Grant! These two doctors are leaders in medicine and strong patient advocates who dedicate time to research and medical education. Dr. Mina Niazi is a Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist and Provincial Clinical Lead for the Liver Transplant Program at RUH. Her main clinical focus includes chronic liver disease, including pre- and post-liver transplant. Dr. Gudrun Caspar-Bell is an Endocrinologist and Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Caspar-Bell’s area of interest includes thyroid disease, diabetes and metabolic bone disease. At our September 23 voting event, Dr. Caspar-Bell and Dr. Niazi will present their project "Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Osteoporosis in Women with Chronic Liver Disease." We’re pleased to share that Dr. Camille Hamula is one of three short-listed applicants competing for the 2024–2025 $100,000 Women Leading Philanthropy (WLP) Grant! Dr. Camille Hamula is a clinical microbiologist with 10 years of experience in both Canada and the United States. She is also the provincial Clinical Lead for Laboratory Quality and Safety in the Saskatchewan Health Authority, and is dedicated to ensuring quality laboratory testing. Dr. Hamula has published extensively on novel diagnostics for women’s health, sepsis, antimicrobial resistance and other pathogens and has used her findings to implement provincial changes to microbiology testing. At our September 23 voting event, Dr. Hamula will discuss her project “Improving HPV Screening: HPV Genotype Distribution in Northern Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Patients.” Want to fund this project? We're thrilled to share that Dr. Amanda Hall is one of three short-listed applicants competing for the 2024–2025 $100,000 Women Leading Philanthropy (WLP) Grant! Dr. Hall completed her medical degree, followed by general surgery residency training, and a PhD in Health Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. She pursued subspecialty training in pediatric surgery through a fellowship at McGill University, Montreal. Now, Dr. Hall spends 60% of her time practicing pediatric surgery, and 40% of her time in her laboratory, where her team studies intestinal diseases in both children and adults. At our September 23 voting event, Dr. Hall will discuss her project, "Creating a New Cellular Model of the Gut-Brain Axis in Ulcerative Colitis." Stay tuned to hear about the other finalists!

Thank you to Saskatchewan Blue Cross for your $50,000 donation! This donation will fund Dr. Alexandra Carter's project, "Integrated Wellness Program for Saskatchewan People Living with Epilepsy." Last year, Dr. Carter was one of our finalists for the WLP grant, and we are thrilled that her project is receiving funding. For more than 30 years, Saskatchewan Blue Cross has worked closely with the Royal University Hospital Foundation (RUH) to advance healthcare in our province. We're proud to announce, to further strengthen our relationship and support, we're investing $50,000 in the Saskatchewan Epilepsy Program at RUH. The program provides in-patient care and support for the estimated 10,000 people in the province living with epilepsy. Funds will assist in providing an Integrated Wellness Program for people living with epilepsy and their caregivers, offering education, social support and the removal of psychological barriers to promote healthy lifestyles while enhancing quality of life.
