September 30th is Orange Shirt Day, or the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It’s a day to honour the children who never returned home, residential school survivors, their families, and communities. One of the ways we can honour survivors is to push for the completion of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action. 🧡 Local governments have an important role to play in implementing the Calls to Action. An action you can take in the lead up to September 30th is to email your council asking them what they’re doing to make progress on the Calls to Action for local government. We’ve made it easy for you! Check out the letter template below and if you want more ideas of actions to take check out our blog post. ⤵️ Letter template ➡️🔗 https://lnkd.in/eKdgpy33 Blog post ➡️🔗 https://lnkd.in/eyw9BiF2

Access to justice is a fundamental principle which enables citizens to access their rights in an effective way. It means that when people encounter life problems that have legal implications, they will be able to understand and assert their rights in a neutral process pursuant to the fair rule of law. Access to justice helps to preserve human dignity. It is a means of assuring good and effective government. And, it is helpful in efforts to grow civil society and to reduce and end poverty. It can determine whether basic human needs for food, shelter, family relationships, and safety will be met, and it can mean everything for a person in crisis. Find out more about the role of barristers in enabling access to justice more generally. https://shorturl.at/mgq6g

📑 Policy@Manchester has supported a written evidence submission to the Modern Slavery Act 2015 Committee's inquiry examining the Act's impact and effectiveness. 💡 The inquiry also set out to consider how the Act’s provisions have been implemented, how it has been impacted by recent political developments, and whether it requires improvement. The published written evidence by Professor David Gadd and Professor Rose Broad uses their research to demonstrate how current policy decreases the protections available to those who are destitute and exploited. 🔵 The phrase “transitional justice” is, perhaps, one of the most frequently used terms that is largely incomprehensible to people outside of the justice sector. Transitional justice work encompasses a wide range of activities aimed at furthering society’s ability to come to terms with the history and impacts of large-scale conflict, repression, and human rights violations. Transitional justice aims to provide recognition to victims, survivors, and families; to rebuild the trust of individuals in state institutions; to reinforce respect for human rights; and to promote the rule of law, all as critical steps towards reconciliation and the prevention of new violations. Find out more about the five pillars of transitional justice and Synergy’s recent work in the area in our May blog post: https://lnkd.in/dpYZZTii
