Engaging in sports during youth significantly shapes the future landscape of sports consumption, and the outlook for women's sports is especially promising—a noteworthy addition to the narrative. Aspen Institute Sports & Society's recent annual analysis focused on the trends influencing sports engagement among youth aged 6-17, revealing a compelling development in 2023: The dynamics of sports participation are shifting, with an uptick among girls and a decline among boys. In 2022, boys (40%) continued to engage in sports more consistently than girls (35%), based on national data from the SFIA - Sports & Fitness Industry Association. However, the intriguing shift is evident: a decade ago, half of boys regularly participated in sports, while the current participation rate for girls marks the highest since 2013. Additionally, Deloitte predicts that women’s elite sports will generate global revenues of US$1.28 billion in 2024. This is the first time that annual global revenues for women’s sport will have surpassed US$1 billion. Commercial revenue, which includes club sponsorships, partnerships, and merchandising sales, currently represents the largest share of total revenue (US$696 M, 55%). This is followed by broadcast (US$340 M, 27%), and matchday revenues (US$240 M, 18%). The two most valuable women’s sports are projected to be football (US$555 M, 43%) and basketball (US$354 M, 28%), while the largest geographical markets in 2024 are forecast to be North America (US$670 M, 52%) and Europe (US$181 M, 14%). Anticipating positive prospects for the future of women's sports in the US!

I have long advocated for the importance of sports, especially for women, as additive to the educational experience and a key teacher of life skills that are valuable long after the athlete hangs up her uniform. I have also spoken out about the need to invest in women's sports and the importance of media access to view women's sports. This NCAA / ESPN deal is a great step in that direction. https://lnkd.in/emSR3W9C #womeninsports #titleix

My dude! Catalyzing human positive tipping points because others are blind to our emerging future 🙌🏽 There are so many underappreciated assets out there. The catch: your investing lens must have evolved from a single value to a multi-value systems view.
Ignoring the opportunity of women's sports is a *huge* business failure. Was honored to share my take on this at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity on how the NCAA completely missed the mark when they originally withheld "March Madness" from Women's Basketball 🤷♂️

Insightful op-ed regarding the WNBA setting the standard for fan inclusion in social media as mentioned in the the Sports Business Journal’s “Unpacks” summary: “Tonight’s op-ed is from professors Lauren Hindman of Hofstra and Ajhanai Keaton of Louisville and UMass vice chancellor Nefertiti Walker, in partnership with Washerman’s The Collective think tank, on taking cues from the WNBA when it comes to social media. ‘Don’t shy away from athlete representation off the court. Women’s sports fans want to see lifestyle and fashion coverage of their favourite athletes. Just don’t sexualize athletes when doing so. Oh, and hire more women and queer photographers to limit ‘the male gaze’ when capturing images.’ Helpful tips for WNBA player agents with implications for NWSL agents and those of other women’s sports.
