Saunders, Sherrie Barch, and Stephanie Mercado CAE CPHQ joined our Confab for Advancing Women Leaders yesterday to lead a discussion based on their new book, Unstoppable: Inspiring Stories of Perseverance, Triumph and Joy from Trailblazing Women in Healthcare. As women executives shared intimate stories of their lives, two themes emerged: resilience and the unity between personal and professional lives. Loved attending the panel today “Male allyship in the Modern Workplace”, organized by the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association at my very own undergrad school University of Miami - organized by my dear friend and healthcare star Massiel M. Nunez . Why allyship? The numbers are staggering: - Only 15% of healthcare systems have female CEOs - Only 13 of the world’s 193 Presidents are women 🌎 - Female physicians earn 24% less than male. And Latinas are the lowest paid group - 74% of females are harassed in medical training - It’s estimated, it will take 140 years for women to be represented equally in positions of leadership! 🙌We can’t wait that long🙌 The amazing panelists and #HBA moderator, Mari Escalón, MD, MS, MBA, shared personal stories, discussed barriers, and opportunities, dealing with implicit bias, and fostering an inclusive workplace. Thank you: - Krishna Komanduri who shared so many lessons about hidden bias in healthcare and how allies can help make change happen- so that more smart women (like his talented tripelet daughters) can run the world one day! - Steven G. Ullmann who brought a world of stories and stats through the decades, and enlightening perspectives (all approved by his wife of course 😉) - Chris Brennan for sharing more takes on mentorship and building a better future for his young girls (who already look up to mom, the entrepreneur!) Status Quo Definition: An existing state of affairs If the status quo hadn’t shifted, there would be no women physicians nor women leaders in healthcare. Women had to fight to even get the opportunity to own land, get an education, and vote. Maintaining the status quo would have kept these milestones from happening. In healthcare, the status quo often perpetuates biases within organizations that hinder women leaders from reaching their full potential.
