We’ve discussed the need for a diverse talent pipeline a few times on this platform, and it’s a main topic of concern for our clients. But why is it so important? This Forbes article illustrates it well – when we don’t address the proverbial elephant in the room (bias and prejudice in the workplace), we miss the opportunity to do better. In 2021, Rosalind “Roz” Brewer was announced as Walgreens’ next CEO. She joined the very small list of Black women leaders on the Fortune 500 list. By September 2023, she was out. It’s been well documented that people of color face higher expectations for success, with less time to achieve it. This is especially true for women of color. Roz’s case is a perfect example of this phenomena working in real time. So, what do we do about it? We recommend first looking at your talent pipeline and how you grow and move leaders up your internal structure. If you aren’t seeing diversity in that pipeline, or if it’s only diverse until you reach certain level positions, start there. Once you’ve addressed how to diversify your pipeline, you can then turn your focus to ensuring that everyone feels supported to succeed. This will challenge how you do business. It won’t be easy. According to this research and despite modest female representation progress in senior leadership roles, Black women still face unique barriers to reaching the upper ranks, and their much slower promotion pace has led them to, on average, take more frequent career risks than their white counterparts. Companies should take a holistic view and facilitate organizational changes that create positive leadership experiences for all employees and elicit more opportunities for minority leaders to emerge.

It has been a rollercoaster of a few weeks. Outside of many personal challenges, I have been analysing the results of our recent research, writing our new report and planning the launch event that happened this Tuesday 16th April. The level of stress, pressure (mostly self-created as I am so passionate about our cause) plus what cards live dealt me within the last few weeks and months, meant that I had to come to terms with a vast sea of emotions that came after our launch event. As our research showed 81% of women (we didn't have enough men filling in the survey to include them) believe there aren't enough women in senior leadership positions in retail and 58% feel their career progression has been restricted. We asked what are the reasons for it, how can we solve it, what challenges female leaders face and even how we perceive leaders (gender-neutral) compared to female andmale leaders. The results weren't shocking as our brilliant panel of speakers said, but it didn't stop them from offering incredible inspiration, personal experiences and solutions they believe can help. Here is an important article for all women leaders, and aspiring women leaders. Though the subject of the leadership challenges for a woman is a democratic governor, the message is not a political one. It is about some of the challenges of being a leader as a woman that men don't experience, and are often not even aware of. If we are to succeed in fully unleashing the resource that women leaders are, for our organizations and society, we need to find a way to speak openly about what is it that needs to be transformed. As an executive coach of many years standing I have had the opportunity of working with many brilliant and committed women leaders and have first hand experience of their unique access to being effective leaders. Which, by the way, lots of research now validates as specific, observable, and measurable differentiators. The olympics have enthralled millions as we are inspired by the atheletes dedication and their awesome often record breaking performances...once the sole domain of men. We can see how much richer the olympics are by the inclusion of women...the same richness is available in the world of leadership by including even more women and, in the process, getting rid of the unnecessary and limiting constraints that keep women handicapped, and our enterprises disadvantaged.

When I set the 2024 goal to smash my personal branding, I didn’t realise how difficult it was going to be! 🤣 I definitely envy those Linkedin users that make this look like a breeze, but it is anything but easy!
