WEEKEND READ: "Why women's sports must strive for better than equality" by Lindsay Gibbs at Power Plays is expands on the unique opportunity women's sports have right now to create a blueprint for inclusion, safety, and fan appreciation. "This toxicity, exploitation, and incompetence is often justified by pointing to similar environments and norms men’s sports. But while it’s fine to use men’s sports as a blueprint, customizations should be encouraged. As women’s sports build, the leaders have a CHOICE about what kind of leagues they want to build and what king of fanbases and sponsorships they want to cultivate." https://lnkd.in/eVHfG8ui Subscribe to Power Plays for thoughtful analysis of women's sports — and how we talk about them.

Award Winning, 12-year LGBTQ+ 🏳️🌈 Marketing Exec, currently VP Sales Q.Digital (LGBTQ Nation, Queerty, Outsports, GayCities, INTO). || Fmr Out, Advocate, Pride, iHeartMedia || 18-year Advertising & Journalism Career
The news is out....Outsports is now part of LGBTQ-owned and LGBTQ-targeted collective Q.Digital, owner of Queerty, GayCities, INTO, LGBTQ Nation. For 25 years, OutSports has been home to the digital community that consumes the best in class, industry leading sports coverage on LGBTQ+ culture – championing the stories of legendary athletes, coaches, executives, and media personalities advancing queer inclusion in athletics. Since its inception, Outsports has gained millions of followers, profiled over 1000 athletes all through brand safe content. Digiday: "The plan for increasing Outsports’ audience is to cross-promote traffic from Q.Digital’s other titles (by integrating links and featuring articles on other properties) — a strategy that worked to grow Q.Digital’s publication Into “by 10X” in two years. Outsports, which currently does not have an email strategy, will also launch newsletters soon, Q.Digital CEO Scott Gatz said. Outsports founder Jim Buzinski also predicted a traffic bump from Olympics coverage this summer." (read more: https://lnkd.in/eBiddKEZ) Previous OutSports owner Vox now ranks among other mainstream media companies who struggled to properly represent and grow LGBTQ media brands amongst a broader portfolio (ie. Viacom with NewNowNext, AfterEllen, or Huff Post with Huff Po Queer Voices) even as LGBTQ marketing budgets have flourished over the last ten years. (“It was never really a great fit,” Buzinski said to Digiday. “We were never really a focus of their sales strategy.”) The best place to invest in LGBTQ marketing is in LGBTQ-owned and LGBTQ-targeted media, with teams who know how to ensure authenticity in the market. "Gatz said Q.Digital can afford the additional costs of running Outsports’ business because the company brought in its “best annual revenue ever” in 2023. ...Q.Digital’s business model is mostly built off of directly-sold advertising, with 95% of revenue last year coming from direct-sold display advertising, sponsorships, events and custom content, Gatz said." https://lnkd.in/eeyGDMXE

💯💯#womenleadership #womenleaders #partnershipsystems. We lead with our values that put people, planet, and purpose first. Community first. Leading by thinking about the impact on others.
"instead of brainstorming ways for women’s sports to “catch up” with men’s sports, let’s fight for the values women leaders are prioritizing like people, planet and purpose. Men’s sports is not the model by which we should measure ourselves." #women #nationalgirlsandwomeninsports https://lnkd.in/eRgMnE_f

The future growth of sports is female!
This is an historic moment in the annuls of women's sports and one to remember. For the first time, the interest and fervor surrounding Women's March Madness has outstripped that of the men's tournament. Perhaps it is a result of the Caitlin Clark effect, but women stars in college basketball are beginning to gain national recognition. Not only is there Caitlin Clark, but LSU's Angel Reese, UConn's Paige Bueckers, USC's JuJu Watkins and Stanford's Cameron Brink are beginning to emerge as household names. See my article in Forbes below to understand the significance of this moment. Mark my words, we are only at the beginning of this trend for gender equality in sports and we want to be in epicenter of it all. Stay tuned for more. What do you think will be the next big moment in women's sports? Frank Cooper III, Andrea Brimmer, Lisa Leslie, Shelley Zalis; Shaquille O'Neal; Alicia Tillman; Carrie Palin; Mark A. Founder, EDGE Certified Foundation, custodians of the world's leading DE&I Certification standard, and EDGE Strategy, provider of EDGE Empower, DE&I data for businesses. Thought leader on Forbes Business Council
“Sport is a microcosm of society. It reflects what’s going on in the rest of the world and in businesses. We know that if you have at least 30% of women on a board, that [margins] go up 6%. We know that 94% of women in the c-suites identify as an athlete,” claims Billie Jean King. Billie Jean King is the incarnation of the fact that the fight for equality, equity, and inclusion… demands to be taken further. Leaders need to demonstrate the business case for investing in DE&I efforts, and Billie argues that women’s sports leaders need to call attention to the financial opportunity of investing in women’s sports in order to make progress. #DEI #DEIStrategy #WomenSports #WomenEmpoweringWomen #BusinessLeaders #BusinessLeadership #InvestmentStrategies

Educator | Helping Coaches and Athletic Directors Transform Student-Athletes Through Personal Development
"As more female athletes become household names, the investment in women's sports is likely to increase." - Jayna Hefford, PWHL Senior Vice President of Operations 💡I read these words by Hefford and thought about the pressure on female athletes to advocate for equality and representation in sports. Is it an unspoken requirement or a matter of personal preference? Is it frowned upon if female athletes choose not to take a public platform to highlight the challenges surrounding women in sport? 🤷🏽♀️ Women's sports have significantly increased views over the last few years. Veterans and newcomers advocating for equality and overall respect, new initiatives such as NIL, and women taking high positions within the sports community are all helping to shift the narrative. But with a distance to go, are all female athletes willing to jump on board? And how do we navigate around those who choose not to? 🔗 Industry leaders discuss their take on the major shifts and the obstacles that remain when considering the advancement of women's sports.
