This day was created to bring Youth issues to the global attention and celebrate the potential of Youth to drive positive change and achieve the sustainable development goals set in the UN 2030 Agenda. In many parts of the world, Youth, that comprise half of the global population, are at the centre of human rights and sustainability activism. We highlight the urgency to include this vast youth population in political dialogues and decision-making processes around crucial matters, including climate change, peace, democracy, and human rights. Yesterday marked one year of Sudan's civil war, and the crisis has hit alarming milestones with more than 18 million people facing starvation, and 70 percent of hospitals no longer functioning. Humanitarian needs are escalating alongside reports from UNHCR of surges in sexual violence. The humanitarian response is severely underfunded, far from meeting OCHA's estimate $2.7Bn requirement. Among imperatives is the importance of recognizing the specific needs of women and girls in both the humanitarian response as well as in routes to stabilization and peace. There’s a powerful program across El Salvador called "De Una!" that supports young people and women. Through various UN agencies, the government, the private sector, NGOs, and communities, the program encourages youth, prevention violence, and peace by empowering residents (specifically young people and women) to take ownership of peacebuilding in their communities. The program addresses root causes of conflict, improves social cohesion, and develops economic opportunities. "De Una!" proves that involving women and youth is essential as catalysts for change, knowing they hold unique perspectives and skills contributing to conflict prevention, resolution, and long-term sustainable peace.
