Introducing HerTechVenture: Empowering Women in Tech Innovation and Entrepreneurship! 🌟   HerTechVenture is a dynamic project co-funded by EU aimed at creating inclusive ecosystems in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to combat gender stereotypes and encourage women to pursue careers in technology. The project focuses on boosting confidence, developing entrepreneurial skills, and fostering a passion for tech business careers among female students. Activities include research and training for HEI educators, development of the GenderWise training program, entrepreneurship programs, mentoring, and hackathons for female students, culminating in a final awards event. We need more women in tech! Unfortunately this will not realize unless we are able to increase diversity of the talent pool and encourage girls to consider education and career in tech! I am very excited to be part of the solution as I took on the role of country lead for Finland with Girls in Tech Nordics! Did you know that only 23% of personnel working in technology industry in Finland are female, 29% in IT specifically (source Teknologiateollisuus statistics). A diverse world needs tech made by diverse people. The gender gap in tech can be traced back to education, with fewer female student having a career in technology promoted to them. With missing encouragement and role models we are failing to engage the future female talents to the industry. I am incredibly proud that Girls in Tech Nordics, a movement across the Nordic countries, was recently awarded the Initiative of the Year by Nordic Women in Tech Awards. We are bringing together students and technology companies to provide the students with facts and insights on what kind of careers tech industry has to offer and to hear inspiring career stories of women in tech today. Most rewarding feedback has been that when we ask in the beginning of an event who have considered a career in tech only a few shy hands raising compared to 90% of hands up at the end of the session! Girls have said they feel that they have been invited as insiders, recognized as valuable future talents. This work will bear fruit 5-10 years but if we do not put in the effort the diversity challenge will prevail. Time to take action is now! We are already busy planning sessions for spring and autumn 2025 and we are looking to expand our reach to multiple new cities. If you want to get involved reach out and be part of the solution! Feedback from participating companies has been very good, we at GiTN take care of the practicalities while companies bring the content and the role models to engage with the future talents!

These pioneers leverage their technical expertise to create startups in sectors like tech, biotech, and engineering, showcasing the power of combining science and entrepreneurship. Examples: Jessica Matthews, founder of Uncharted Power, developed renewable energy solutions for underserved communities. Frederick Hutson, founder of Pigeonly, uses technology to improve communication between incarcerated individuals and their families. 2: Turning Science into Business   The transition from STEM fields to entrepreneurship is an exciting journey. Black founders are using their knowledge to develop cutting-edge technologies and solutions, bridging the gap between scientific innovation and business success. Their startups offer unique insights into solving modern challenges. Examples: Timothy Maurice Webster, founder of Mindfluence Revolution, uses neuroscience for personal and brand leadership. Kimberly Bryant, founder of Black Girls Code, empowers the next generation of young women in technology. 3: STEM Startups with Social Impact   Many Black-owned STEM startups focus on driving social change. From developing new medical devices to sustainable engineering solutions, these businesses are improving access to technology and services for underserved communities, showcasing the impact of diversity in STEM. Examples: Rwanda’s Henri Nyakarundi, founder of African Renewable Energy Distributor (ARED), provides off-grid energy kiosks in Africa. From Street to School: The Power of Tech for Inclusive Education On Tuesday Nov 26th 2024, I had the privilege of joining an incredible panel of trailblazers at the Street to School: A Tech-Based Solution summit organized by #IAFoundation where we tackled one of the most pressing issues of our time—ensuring education for out-of-school children through technology. As I shared the stage with brilliant minds, our conversations centered on how we can leverage EdTech to create inclusive and transformative learning experiences for marginalized communities. We explored the opportunities technology offers to bridge gaps in education, but we also acknowledged the challenges—access, affordability, language barriers, and the digital divide—that we must continue to overcome. I spoke passionately about TechFam: African Women Digital Skills Acquisition Initiative work in this space, particularly how we empower girls and women in underserved communities through programs like the Femme Robotics Competition. These initiatives are designed not only to teach tech skills but to inspire hope, spark creativity, and unlock untapped potential in individuals who often face systemic barriers. Inclusivity in technology is not just a goal; it’s a necessity. If we are to build a world where everyone has equal access to education and opportunity, we must ensure that no one—regardless of their background, location, or circumstances—is left behind. To my fellow speakers and organizers, thank you for your insights and passion. Together, we are shaping a future where technology becomes the great equalizer in education.
