Get obsessed with distribution. But not just anywhere. The right stores, the right places. 🚀 Our Hershey’s Urban Activation team secured over 12,000 new distribution points for Reese’s and Hershey’s products last year. Awesome, right? 💰Well not unless those distribution points are in the path of our target consumer. That’s why 90% of our visits were made into Symbols last year, targeting retailers with bigger shelves, bigger basket spend and bigger wholesale pull through. 🧡 This year we will be focusing on continued growth in Convenience and painting those shelves orange. We kicked off 2024 with two days away with the full Hershey’s Urban Activation team meeting in the City of Nottingham this week. We learnt all about the incredible growth the Reese’s brand is having in UK Convenience, we listened to the exciting brand plans and NPD coming down the line. We ate too many peanut butter cups. 10 years after IMPOSSIBLE… Sometimes it just takes 10 years, but that’s still not impossible. When I started The CHILLAFISH Company, the first reactions were “wow”, “beautiful products”, “fantastic design”… it couldn’t be more positive. But together with those compliments came the warnings, the but’s. But you won’t get into the big box retailers, everyone wants that, that’s impossible. Nice design, but don’t dream, too expensive, too specialty… That was the message. We are now more than 10 years later and have become a stable supplier to Walmart, Target, Costco, Sam’s Club and many more. Today we have an item in Walmart with top quality at a super price and we are beating other items simply because we stuck to our credo: being innovative, offering value, focus on design. Yes we had to invest a lot in product development, innovation, brand building. Yes we had to rethink some strategies and directions. But that’s still not the same as “impossible”. Our brand has evolved without changing the core. We have a wider range of price points, we have more basic items next to our innovations, but innovation and design will remain at the core. One does not exclude the other. Here’s to everyone fighting and persisting to get where they want to get. Open your ears, listen, learn, change when you need to, but stick to your values if you believe you should. Here’s also to all our new and old customers that believe in us, that value our innovation and design, that value open communication and honest business. We stopped into Chutters this weekend in Littleton, NH for some post-hike candy. For the past 40+ years we’ve read stories about how independent retail like this around the country has gone bankrupt in the face of competition from sprawling exurban shopping malls, WalMart, Amazon or a variety of other Boogeymen. That hasn’t happened to Chutters, which is perpetually crowded and is a destination year round. All they had to do to protect their business from competition was maintain the Guinness-certified World Record for longest Candy Counter at 111 Feet. In reality, it isn’t that hard to execute. The Candy is in hundreds of self-serve glass Jars which allows for great variety (like 20 different kinds of salty licorice) without a ton of Labor. The key is that they came up with a DIFFERENTIATION plan, and stuck to it. There are 4 primary ways a retailer can feasibly differentiate from it’s competitors: 1. Price 2. Customer Service 3. Experience (Aka Fun) 4. Product Assortment EVERY retailer needs to protect their differentiation base or they won’t be around 10 years from now. If you are Wal Mart, Aldi or Dollar General, you can differentiate on Price alone and win most of the time. Otherwise, you’ll need to differentiate on Service, Experience, or Assortment. At Pod Foods when we talk about delivering innovation into retailers what we are really talking about is giving retailers a different assortment than their competitors so they can protect their business. 👉Retailers: how many of the items that you are buying from your Primary Distributor are NOT already available in your larger competitors? 👉The answer is much smaller than it needs to be. When you work in our trade, you really have to watch your filters. I looked at this Tony's Chocolonely display in Waitrose & Partners and at first thought there was a cheeky store manager putting private label on there, completely ignoring the messaging on the display. It’s good to have reminders like this. As soon as we forget to look at stores as shoppers, we’re not giving ourselves an honest appraisal. What’s your thoughts? Thought experiment... if you had a brick and mortar retail store, and unlimited funding, what are a few things your store would need to have? What would you sell? Mine would need to have: 1. Comfy chairs everywhere for resting (fellow spoonies chime in!) 2. A killer CRM/loyalty system connected to Heartland Retail to track purchases and rewards.. think about how awesome the Starbucks rewards system is. I want that!! 3. PLANTS! If you know me, you know I have "too many plants". I would have gorgeous anthuriums, fiddle leafs, and hoyas. Now realizing I will probably need sunlights installed... What would I sell? There is always a lot of excitement with new placement! I want to see it right when it hits the shelf! The issue is that early placement may be before the POG teams get to the stores! I saw 2 Van Leeuwen Ice Cream skus make their way into a couple Winn-Dixie stores last week! Yesterday was the first time I saw all 7 on shelf! Now, as you can see, they are spread throughout. They’ll probably get aligned in the next few weeks! Still excited to see them! Seeing new placement is one of the best parts of the job! Van Leeuwen is crushing it for SMB Sales & Marketing 🍦7 new skus at Winn Dixie. All new. 🍦Brand new news! 6 new skus coming to Ingles soon. 🍦7 skus at Harris Teeter since we started. 2 new 🍦2 skus hitting Lowes Foods in a few days 🍦4 SKUs upgrade hitting The Fresh Market in a few days. 2 net since we started, but improved skus! 🍦A bunch added to Earth Fare last year! Not all placements are created equal. Data is a wonderful thing, but the eye test and boots on the ground matter just as much in our line of work. The local SKU count at this Whole Foods in Phoenix today wasn’t anything spectacular, but there were 5 big high-impact displays that you just can’t miss and really made a statement. The statement made today about Audrey's Chia Cookies was “buy me”. (Nice cookies, BTW) Full retail, no promotion, no active demo, no romance signage about how deep the retailer-brand partnership is…just old school retail 101: “pile it high, and watch it fly” This might technically be 3 SKUs with 1 POD each, but it’s a LOT more than that in terms of brand presence and consumer mindshare. It’s great to get ON the shelf at a national retailer, but the real trick is to get the product OFF the shelf and into customer’s hands…this display worked on me, and I’m a tough sell.
