🌟 Celebrating Restoration & Reuse Excellence: Brighton Dome Corn Exchange & Studio Theatre 🌟 The Brighton Dome Corn Exchange & Studio Theatre was crowned the Restoration & Reuse winner, showcasing the extraordinary potential of timber in breathing new life into historic buildings. 🏆 This Grade-I & Grade-II listed landmark, nestled within historic Regency gardens and adjoining the Royal Pavilion, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Thanks to Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the project highlights the power of timber restoration to preserve heritage while delivering modern functionality. Key achievements include: 🌳 The repair and restoration of the UK’s longest single-span timber frame, preserving the original structure through advanced engineering and meticulous craftsmanship. 🌳 A stunning blend of old and new timber enhances the building’s warmth and pays homage to the UK’s timber heritage. 🌳 Major technical and operational improvements, including improved accessibility, a new foyer space, and a café – ensuring this cultural hub thrives for another century. Jim Greaves, lead judge of the Wood Awards, summed it up beautifully: "The Brighton Dome Corn Exchange & Studio Theatre stands as an excellent example of restoration and reuse. This project demonstrates how advanced engineering, skilled craftsmanship, and sensitive design can deliver a newly restored and repurposed building fit for the 21st century." This project serves as a beacon for sustainable architecture, proving that restoration and reuse are not only possible but essential in decarbonising construction and preserving history for future generations. 📖 Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/3OhgJh1 🔗 Find out more about the 2024 winners here: https://bit.ly/4fA8nNu 📍 Location: Brighton ✨ Architect: Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (@fcbstudios) 🏗️ Structural Engineer: Arup (@arupgroup) 🪵 Wood Supplier: Neil Burke Joinery [NBJ] / Weitzer Parkett (@nbjlondon, @weitzerparkett) 🏢 Contractor: R. Bridges in buildings are architectural features that connect different parts or sections of a structure, often spanning large gaps like courtyards, atriums, or between floors. These can be used for both functional and aesthetic purposes. Key functions and types of bridges in buildings include: 1. Pedestrian Walkways: These bridges allow people to move easily between parts of a building without descending to lower levels, improving circulation and accessibility. 2. Skybridges: These are enclosed or open-air bridges that connect two separate buildings, often seen in high-rise complexes. They enhance connectivity and are often designed with glass walls for panoramic views. 3. Architectural Features: Some bridges are designed as visual focal points within a building, incorporating artistic design, lighting, and materials like steel or glass. 4. Atrium Bridges: In large atriums, bridges are used to cross open spaces, often adding a dramatic element to the interior. 5. Structural Design: In some cases, bridges in buildings are necessary to address structural or space challenges, distributing weight or providing support for different parts of the building. Notable examples of bridges in buildings include the skybridges of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore or the Apple Park campus in California, where bridges serve both functional and architectural purposes.

Steel's Strength Unveiled 🏗️🔩 Imagine walking into a space where the only limit is the sky above. That's the magic of architectural steelwork. It's not just about the structures we create; it's about the boundaries we erase. In the realm of architecture, steelwork is the unsung hero, the silent force that pushes the envelope, allowing us to dream and build bigger, bolder, and more openly. It's the backbone of modern design, enabling vast, uninterrupted interior spaces that defy traditional limitations. Consider the iconic glass facades gracing our skylines. These transparent canvases are supported by the might of steel, offering a seamless transition from the bustling city to the tranquility of an interior haven. Steel's versatility is unmatched, bending to the will of architects' most creative impulses while maintaining the integrity of their vision. But it's not just about aesthetics. The practicality of steelwork lies in its ability to span great distances without the need for intermediate columns. This opens up a world of possibilities for interior design, where walls become movable elements, and the flow of space is only dictated by our imagination. In the UK, we've seen a renaissance of sorts, with steelwork taking center stage in projects aiming to revitalize historic buildings. By integrating steel structures, we're able to preserve the past while embracing the future, creating spaces that are both respectful of their heritage and unapologetically modern. As we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, let's not forget the role of steelwork in shaping not just our buildings, but our experiences within them. It's the silent giant upon which our most expansive dreams are built. #Architecture #Steelwork #Innovation

It is always nice the see the fruits of your labour. But as busy structural engineers we don't often get to see the end results of projects. By the time the interior designers have started their magic, we're already head-down on the next project. So when passing this particular project of ours I took the opportunity to stop and look in. The large leisure suite within the basement and four storey curved staircase, all designed and detailed in RC, will be something of dreams! I was quickly turned away and prohibited from entering site due to some privicy requirement from the Client. In hindsight, this is understandable, albeit dissapointing. #structuralengineering #luxuryhomes #luxuryrealestate #superprimerealestate

Design and delivery of a new residential project in Midlothian, Scotland. We were appointed to create a family home out of a derelict steading hidden in the rolling hills of the Scottish countryside. The new building looks to engage with the rural vernacular through form with contemporary lines that orientate the building towards key sightlines and connect it to the surrounding landscape. The timber cladding, supplied by Russwood, accentuates the steading character with black timber creating a bridge between the traditional and contemporary architecture. Products used, Thermopine with black Teknos coating & Siberian Larch with natural SiOO:X coating. The interior design is purposefully subtle and seeks to complement the architecture with large format glazing, hidden doors and tactile materials. A simple palette is employed of hard-wearing natural finishes including timber panelling and reclaimed stone from site applied to a double height feature fireplace which anchors the interior to create an interconnected modern living environment. Building orientation was carefully considered to maximise daylight and passive solar gain on the site. Triple glazed windows, air source heat pumps, high insulation levels and balanced mechanical ventilation and heat recovery are some of the systems utilised to ensure an environmentally positive impact. This building showcases a striking, organic form with sweeping curves that exude fluidity and movement, inspired by natural elements like waves or mountain ridges. Here are key architectural features: - **Curved Roof Structure**: Highly sculptural, the roof's undulating form enhances aesthetics and structural dynamics, allowing for a spacious interior without excessive supports. - **Extensive Use of Glass**: The predominantly glass facade fosters transparency and a seamless connection between interior and surroundings, flooding the space with natural light. - **Material Combination**: Utilizing metal or composite panels for roofing and wood or concrete for framing blends modern aesthetics with durability suitable for diverse weather conditions. - **Integration with Landscape**: The building harmoniously merges with the surrounding mountains and landscape, creating a natural architectural connection. - **Organic Form and Parametric Design**: The fluid shape hints at parametric design tools, optimizing structural performance through complex geometries. Such designs are common in cultural, sports, or research buildings, offering a contemporary and sustainable appeal by incorporating natural light and reducing energy consumption.

Aluminum façades indeed offer a multitude of architectural possibilities, combining modernity and aesthetics. This project stands out for its ability to harmoniously integrate aluminum with other materials such as glass, wood, or stone. Thanks to its lightness and strength, aluminum allows for the creation of innovative structures while maintaining a refined visual appeal. This flexibility encourages varied designs, whether minimalist façades or more daring compositions that play with textures and finishes. The result is a perfect balance between technology, aesthetics, and environmental integration, showcasing modernity and technical expertise.
