Communities Want Federal Restoration Investments to Help Prepare for Climate Change Impacts
The Ohio River Basin provides drinking water, wildlife habitat, natural flood control, and recreational opportunities to surrounding communities. Community members who participated in 31 community listening sessions in the Ohio River Basin believe that federal investments in nature-based infrastructure, pollution reduction, clean energy, and wetland restoration will help their states and communities prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Community feedback from these listening sessions is helping to inform ORBA's plan to restore and protect local waters in the Ohio River Basin. The restoration plan, currently being crafted under the leadership of the National Wildlife Federation, Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, and others, will be delivered to the U.S. Congress later this year, with the goal of using it as a catalyst to secure the federal investments needed to implement the plan, and tackle problems such as sewage waste, toxic pollution, and flooding that threaten the drinking water, public health, recreation, jobs, and quality of life for millions of people in the region.
