This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #InspireInclusion and this brings to mind one of the biggest regrets that I have in my career and the humbling lesson I hope I have learnt. The really sad thing is, that this is an everyday occurrence and for the most part, I suspect that most of us might not even notice what’s really gone on. It was three years ago and I was in a virtual meeting with two women architects from Mulroy, an experienced architect and a Part 2 designer, both of whom were very talented. There were a dozen or so others in the room, all male, and we were exploring the layout of a baby-changing and breast-feeding facility in the toilet core that was required by the design brief. No, that’s not the mistake, although that’s worthy of debate on its own... During the debate one of the men directed his attention to our experienced architect and said, ‘perhaps [she] can go and sort this out because she’s a mum’. Silence. I was shocked, as I believe others were too, nobody said anything and the meeting moved on rapidly. That was my mistake. I froze, not certain how to deal with the situation. Should I have gone in for the kill or made reference to it with some back-handed humour? My brain couldn’t think quick enough, and I did nothing. The project manager changed the subject rapidly, I assume, to avoid making a big deal of it. We just moved on and nobody said anything. Afterwards, I asked both of the architects about it and I apologised for doing nothing; providing a safe work environment extends to more than making sure the photocopier cable isn’t causing a trip hazard. The experienced architect was sanguine. The younger architect summed up the conversation saying, ‘things are only going to get better when men start calling out other men’s poor behaviour’. I’m telling this story because it’s relevant to the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day and also to a whole-team piece of work that we’re currently doing. We are developing our office and business values which is being led by Sue Austin (inspiring business coach),. We are defining what ‘great’ looks like at Mulroy and debating how to achieve self-actualisation within the team. Listening to the discussions brought it home how important it is that everyone feels like they are the main character in their own life. The draft text we developed yesterday is raw and a world away from blandness. It’s setting the standard of action at a high level. Great looks like inspiring inclusion, and definitely not inaction. #iwd #iwd2024 https://lnkd.in/eQ85BKvd https://lnkd.in/eQ85BKvd

Happy International Women's Day 🌞 Celebrate this special day with a powerful symbol - the Mimosa Flower. Did you know that this delicate bloom holds a deep significance for today's occasion? The Mimosa Flower represents the core values of strength, sensitivity and safety. It symbolizes the sun, standing for warmth and resilience, challenging our perceptions of strength in a world often defined by toughness. While searching for the meaning behind this, I found myself questioning... In our go-go, hardened world, where strength often means a hardened exterior, the symbolism of the Mimosa challenges us. It throws us a question: 😌 Are we allowing ourselves and others the space to be vulnerable? Are we creating environments where sensitivity is not just accepted but applauded? On this International Women's Day, let's reflect on the lessons the Mimosa Flower presents. Let's commit to fostering spaces where everyone, regardless of gender, feels safe to show vulnerability and their authentic self, without fear of judgment or harm. 💖 🤗 Start the conversation in your inner circle today about the power of vulnerability. Share your thoughts on how we can build a world that's not just safe but acknowledges and appreciates sensitivity. And as you reflect, consider gifting someone a Mimosa Flower or treating yourself to its beauty 💝 💟 Let's all bloom like Mimosas, baking in the sun's warm glow, together. 🌞

Real progress happens when everyone, regardless of gender, feels like they can speak up and make a difference in what's coming up next. It's about getting involved and making things happen. That's how we pave the way for real and long-lasting impact. 🙌 Let's keep doing our part and making the world a better place. 🎉 Happy International Women's Day! 💜

Celebrating the Greatness of Womanhood on International Women's Day From the strength we possess to the resilience we demonstrate, being a woman is truly something special. Womanhood is not just about biology; it's about a shared experience of navigating a world that often presents us with unique challenges and opportunities. It's about embracing our femininity while breaking barriers and shattering stereotypes. One of the greatest aspects of being a woman is the sense of sisterhood and solidarity that binds us together. We uplift and support each other, celebrating each other's victories and lending a hand during times of struggle. Our collective power is a force to be reckoned with, and it's something to be celebrated. Being a woman means embracing our multifaceted identities – from our roles as daughters, sisters, and mothers to our pursuits as professionals, leaders, and changemakers. We excel in diverse fields, from science and technology to arts and humanities, leaving our mark on every aspect of society. But being a woman also means recognizing the challenges we face – from gender discrimination and inequality to societal expectations and pressures. Despite these obstacles, we continue to rise, proving time and time again that there's nothing we can't overcome when we stand together. On this International Women's Day, let us celebrate the greatness of womanhood in all its forms. Let us honor the women who came before us, paving the way for our success, and inspire the generations that will follow. Together, we can create a future where every woman and girl is valued, respected, and empowered to reach her full potential. To all the incredible women out there, happy International Women's Day! May we continue to embrace our greatness, support each other, and change the world for the better. #InternationalWomensDay #Womanhood #Empowerment #Sisterhood #GenderEquality

The theme for International Women's Day 2024, is 'Inspire Inclusion' whether its through the economic empowerment of recruitment, education, leadership, health or sport we can all celebrate inclusion and take a step towards inspiring it in our day to day lives. International Women's Day is not just a day for the girls, it is a day where every single human being can commit to treating every single human being that they come across with respect and positivity. How can we help each other be the best that we can be today. How can we work as a team to reach a goal or a target. How can we support and inspire each other to challenge ourselves, to be brave, to take a risk, to reach for the stars. Susan B Anthony was a women's rights activist who paved the way to get women the right to vote in America. She travelled far and wide, much of the time by bicycle as it was the only mode of transport where women did not need to be chaperoned. 'I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a bike. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat.' Bicycles gave women the opportunity to leave their domestic duties, to socialise, changed the way they had to dress, pantaloons rather than heavy, corseted dresses, some people say that it even encouraged the building of better roads, as more and more people took to the bicycle, it being so much cheaper and more accessible than the horse and cart. Despite this, remarkably few women cycle for fun in 2024. Today is the day to inspire more women to get out on their bikes, to feel the wind in their hair, to feel that freedom and to enjoy the moment. Happy International Women's Day and Happy Cycling.

I didn't post on International Women's Day. I found myself wondering why, while hiking in BC What could I be doing to affect change? So here is a new idea: Instead of appreciation posts on International Women's Day, what if we posted about our wins from last year? Here is what I hope to see: 🙌🏽 Share success stories on how companies advocated for change. 🙌🏽 Discuss what worked well, what didn't go so well last year. 🙌🏽 Share what metrics to add to company goals around equality. 🙌🏽 Discuss how to measure success around equality. 🙌🏽 Share ways to incorporate allyship in everyday work culture. Let's start this trend, 🙋🏽♀️ What's one thing you or your company is working on, this year?

International Women's Day Post: Part 1 On International Women's Day (March 8th), it's crucial to acknowledge that the celebration isn't always a joyous occasion for every woman. For many, it's a day tinged with sorrow, remembering the loved ones we've lost – sisters, daughters, friends, cousins, aunties, nieces, granddaughters, grandmothers, wives, and girlfriends who are no longer with us. Their absence casts a shadow over the festivities, reminding us of the void they've left behind. As we reflect on this day, it's essential to recognize that not all women feel the same sense of pride and joy in celebrating. Some are still grappling with trauma, facing the harsh realities of patriarchy, and battling against societal norms that seek to diminish their worth. For them, International Women's Day may serve as a solemn reminder of the uphill battles they continue to fight. Let's take a moment to honour the strength and resilience of women everywhere. Behind the facade of celebration lies a mystery of stories sewen with pain, disparity, and the relentless struggle for equality. It's a day to acknowledge the sacrifices made, the laws changed, and the progress achieved in the face of adversity. For many women, the fear of walking alone at night, the constant vigilance against harassment and violence, and the daily challenges of navigating a patriarchal world are all too real. Yet, despite these obstacles, they persist, drawing upon an inner strength that knows no bounds. So, as we commemorate International Women's Day, let's not forget those who cannot personally celebrate – the ones who have paved the way, which is written in the books of history (the told and untold), the ones who continue to fight, and the ones who are no longer with us. Let's stand together in solidarity, amplifying their voices and advocating for a future where every woman can truly thrive. #internationalwomensday #internationalwomensday2024 #Empowerment #Resilience #inspirational #womenleaders #womenleadingchange
