New week, new AI landscape. Here are 5 important stories and announcements from this week: 1. Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet: Claude 3.5 Sonnet has launched, with significant improvements in intelligence, speed, and cost-efficiency. This model surpasses Claude 3 Opus across various evaluations and is available for free on Claude.ai. 2. Ilya Sutskever Starts a New Company: OpenAI’s ex-Chief Scientist Illya Sutskever has announced that he’s starting a new AI company “Safe Superintelligence Inc” a startup that “approaches safety and capabilities in tandem”. 3. Dell is building an “AI factory” with Nvidia: The CEO of Dell (Michael Dell) tweeted that they’re creating an “AI factory” with Nvidia to power Grok for xAI. This is Elon Musk’s next big step to building his much talked about supercomputer for xAI. 4. Getting 50% (SoTA) on Arc-AGI with GPT-4o: For those who aren’t in the loop the ARC Prize is a $1,000,000+ public competition to beat and open source a solution to the ARC-AGI benchmark. Recently, however, it’s become possible to achieve 50% accuracy on the ARC-AGI public test set with GPT-4o simply using basic feature engineering and prompting… The previous SOTA was 34%. 5. New research, models, and datasets from Meta FAIR: FAIR has released six new research artifacts, focusing on themes of innovation, creativity, efficiency, and responsibility in AI. Highlights include Meta Chameleon, which uses unified tokenization for mixed-modal inputs; JASCO for temporally controlled text-to-music generation; and AudioSeal, an audio watermarking technique designed for detecting AI-generated speech.

To be honest with you, don't expect me to claim AI's on the brink of matching human intellect anytime soon! The discussion around artificial general intelligence (AGI) is filled with varied opinions among leading tech figures. While the pursuit of AGI often dominates tech news with its potential for machines to outdo human cognitive tasks, a more grounded conversation emerges from scepticism and alternative viewpoints. Nvidia's Jensen Huang suggests we could see AGI in the next five years, a timeline that Ben Goertzel shortens even further. Elon Musk predicts its arrival by the end of 2025. In contrast, Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist and a Turing Award winner, offers a different take. Recognized as one of AI's pioneering figures, LeCun questions the immediate feasibility of AGI and advocates for aiming at "human-level AI," a milestone he sees as not yet within reach. At a London event, LeCun identified several cognitive hurdles that current AI technologies cannot yet overcome: reasoning, planning, persistent memory, and comprehending the physical world. These issues highlight the current limitations of AI technology, from the unreliability of autonomous vehicles to the struggles of household robots and the limited capabilities of smart assistants. LeCun is particularly critical of large language models (LLMs) for their dependence on text data, which leads to a basic grasp of reality. Despite their convincing language skills, LLMs, he believes, sidetrack the journey towards genuine human-level intelligence. LeCun proposes a different approach: "objective-driven AI," which acquires knowledge about the physical world through sensors and video data to achieve specific goals set by humans. This method aims to build a "world model" that allows machines to foresee and plan actions more accurately. Although the timeline for achieving intelligence that exceeds human capabilities remains open-ended, LeCun emphases the need for steady progress, innovative thinking, and a comprehensive view of intelligence. As we move forward into this fascinating yet unpredictable field, embracing a range of viewpoints is key to developing a more complete approach to AI's future. #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #AGI #MachineLearning #Innovation #FutureOfWork https://lnkd.in/dfpxpp9a
