Much skills-based volunteering is centred around projects of different lengths. Some opportunities might be to complete a one-off piece of work, others may be a short-term project while some might last longer and this is important to take into account when thinking about volunteering. There are many reasons why Origin Energy is a finalist in the 'Best Volunteering Program' category this year... An employee network of 40 Origin Energy Foundation ambassadors, a wide variety of activities available, and an impressive internal communications strategy are just some of them! However, we often hear about the challenges charities face when trying to provide meaningful volunteering opportunities for corporate workplace giving programs. Charities don't always have 'volunteering friendly tasks', or enough resources to support the administration of listing volunteering opportunities. In a considered and strategic approach to this problem, Origin have invested in working closely with charity partners to understand genuine community needs and where Origin is best placed to help. "We take care to ensure all activities align with genuine community needs, creating meaningful impacts for students, communities, and employees." In addition to donating time, volunteers utilize their competencies and experience; for example, by teaching financial skills to students or supporting migrants find a job that matches their skills. Where am I off to this morning I hear you cry 😜 Thrilled today to be heading on the train to Great Yarmouth - can’t wait to see the venue Norfolk Community Foundation in true best practise, have asked me to deliver a workshop to their grantees as well as some ongoing support to see the practical application of today’s training. Today I will be focussing on qualitative evaluation and especially focus groups so that grantees have more tools to evaluate their Know Your Neighbourhood projects. Little matters more than how we evaluate because we get to show in this way, that we care deeply about the outcome and the difference we are making in people’s lives. It’s never evaluation for evaluation’s sake. Today, the 12 experts in the room will be exploring: 💡 why we evaluate 💡 how we evaluate 💡 the role of qualitative evaluation 💡 how to run focus groups 💡 what stops us evaluating And then going away with the next steps to start their qualitative evaluation (if they haven’t already!).
