In an excellent way the 2000 respondents came with 1500 specific comments, compiled in a fantastic list of actions to be addressed. Safety first! Kudo's to the maritime industry. There is a high willingness to sail on ammonia, recognizing the need to decarbonize, yet conditionally with safe design and proper training. Of course. This is how ammonia as commodity and main ingredient for fertilizer evolved the last century: safe design, continuous training for operational staff and a well developed emergency response. I have been asked to moderate a maritime panel at the Ammonia Energy Association annual conference with Cato Esperø, Ed Glossop and Jens Ismar. The lists in the report addressing knowledge and training give already more than sufficient hooks to discuss. What can maritime industry learn from ammonia industry? And equally important: what can we learn from maritime industry when LNG was implemented, and how methanol was implemented. Both are/were new fuels which came with new risks, like the ones mentioned for ammonia as well: human health, leakages, flammability; and as such also required new design and hence training in operating procedures and emergency response. #LetsDecarbonize #SafetyFirst

Today, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) announced a $300M commitment to support clean hydrogen trade with Germany, a key step in creating a transatlantic hydrogen economy. This initiative, part of the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance, will leverage Canada's vast natural resources and technology to produce and export #CleanHydrogen. Midsummer is currently in Colombia with a Swedish trade delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard. The objective is to explore opportunities and strengthen collaborations in the energy sector - and especially in renewable energy in which Colombia is the Latin American leader. During the visit, Midsummer will evaluate the possibility of establishing a mega factory for the production of thin film solar cells in Colombia. This is massive. During my PhD defense closed session, one of my committee members asked me: "why is it so hard to get these ISOs and grid operators to try out some of our algorithms?" Essentially, his question sprouted from the fact that I developed a lot of methods/algorithms and his own experience, these methods or tools only stay within the academic or research realm. Building new tech is easy, building the right tech is hard, but getting the right people to use your product in a mission-critical way, is a monumental task. I struggled with this fact during my PhD, even when collaborating with industry partners and utilities. Many even accuse the energy utilities to be "dinosaurs" - however the reasons make sense. The grid controls the national economy and the incentives to adopt new tech (especially in the US), are not aligned. It is a dream to see years of hard work crescendo at this massive moment, as everyone is scrambling to secure the next clean electron, in parallel with preserving our environment. #Tapestry #Energy #AI

About two weeks ago, I had the honor of representing Wood Mackenzie by moderating a panel on The Perspectives of thermoelectric power plants as a driver for developing and consolidating natural gas in Brazil during the Gas and Energy Week, at the invitation of Blue Ocean Business Events. As it's known, natural gas plays a central role in the energy transition, thanks to its versatility as a low-carbon fuel. However, both the gas market and the thermoelectric sector are facing major challenges and transformations. Despite various supply sources, such as domestic gas, Bolivian gas, and LNG, stagnant demand and increasing competition from other energy sources have impacted investments in the sector. Moreover, the modernization of thermoelectric plants, the new energy dynamics driven by renewables and increasingly frequent heatwaves—which require faster generation ramp-ups—present significant challenges for the gas supply chain. We had a great discussion with Claudia Sousa (ATGas), Edmundo Silva (Abraget), Jorge Moreno (Tecnogera) and Humberto Quintas (New Fortress), shedding light on complex and strategic issues for the sector.
