Ports. Certainly not the most glamorous, but brilliant locations to get the real understanding of a place. Ports hold so many stories and it’s always the first place I will visit in a new town - a habit I undoubtedly picked up from John Goodlad..(thanks for that Dad!) This is the port of Fredrikshaven in North Denmark.🇩🇰 And the vessel in the picture is ExxonMobil Zafiro Producer, sent to the port for scrapping from Equatorial Guinea. But what actually makes a good port? It’s certainly not by chance, it’s a strategic choice. For Frederikshavn it’s the following: Optimal quayside depth Minimal tidal variations Ice-free and sheltered water Access to North Sea oil sectors Optimal sailing conditions year-round Established infrastructure Efficient logistics Sea, road, rail and air access 1000 meter new quay Nothing is by chance. The #InteroceanicCorridor, a regional development program that covers 79 municipalities, 33 in the state of #Veracruz and 46 in the state of #Oaxaca, sits at the top of #Mexico's development policy agenda. The visit that President #LópezObrador and President-elect #Sheinbaum made to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec aboard the #InteroceanicTrain last weekend and the ongoing investments (including roads, rehabilitation of Pemex #petrochemical plants and transport of #naturalgas) hints that, for the incoming government, this initiative/region will continue to be a priority. I think the Skills Transition piece for FLOW is the most likely to be overlooked here and I will be focusing on that intently! The opportunity I have in mind for this call centres around the 5th deepest inland body of water in the UK (>125m depth), which is right here in Wales (the 1st-4th are all Lochs in Scotland). I think there's an opportunity for a dedicated inland Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) training centre, which would benefit from: - minimised inclement weather disruption - no seafaring for access to training environment - Controlled environment with ready access for emergencies and evacuation - Existing deep water commercial diving expertise - Onsite accommodation and learning facilities - Opportunity for real world demonstration of deep anchoring/moorings systems for floating wind turbine rigs, which aren't on the seabed 60km from land. These can be accessed via ROV or deep commercial diving from the comfort of lakeside, pontoon, or rib. There are already dedicated lakeside facilities which could be tailored to the growing needs of the sector, and there is excellent provision and plans for ensuring the site runs as Net Zero through renewable energy generation via Solar, Wind, and Hydro and energy storage. We need to build a local base of knowledge and expertise that is resilient and flexible to deliver on this ambitious industrial transition in South Wales. A partnership approach no less. Naturally, we need to tap into this potential.”    These are the words from our new Business Development Manager, Tracy Jin. With more than 10 years of experience from working across the supply chain, Tracy has an in-depth understanding of the opportunities and potential of the global market combined with a local knowledge.    “Port Esbjerg is one of the Nordic’s major intermodal hubs. Our aspiration is to become an intermodal logistics hub for all of Europe. To reach this potential, we need to develop growth opportunities towards global markets and create solutions for existing and new customers through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions,” Tracy says.     The expansion of the port area, the ongoing deepening of the fairway and developing the port to optimize operations for the TEN-T network are crucial components for scaling the area. 📢Calling all #Caerphilly based businesses 📢 The Crown Estate application window is open for an initial £10 million first round of funding that will be specifically aimed at UK projects that could support floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea. The application process will close on 30 July 2024. Successful projects will be announced from October 2024 following assessment of applications, negotiation of funding and commitment agreements and necessary approvals. The accelerator will provide matched funding of up to £1m per project to UK supply chain projects to help them undertake the early-stage development works necessary to get them “investment-ready”. A further £40 million has been earmarked that could potentially be deployed to support UK projects that meet opportunities identified by the Industrial Growth Plan, which sets out how to triple offshore wind manufacturing capacity over the next 10 years.
