👷 Reviving Empty Spaces in Scotland’s Towns 🏘️ Next week, the Scotland’s Towns Conference in Perth will highlight the inspiring work underway to transform vacant and derelict buildings across Perth and Kinross. From creating affordable housing and community spaces, to reviving iconic sites like Perth Museum, the Vacant and Eyesore Property Taskforce is leading the way in turning eyesores into assets. These projects are improving local economies, boosting community pride, and showing what’s possible when councils, businesses, and communities work together. At the conference, Councillor Grant Laing and Tom Arthur MSP will highlight how these initiatives can serve as a model for inspiring nationwide action. " "As placemaking practitioners working on one of the first wave of towns to be selected in the former mill town of Nelson in Lancashire, we have seen first-hand the pros and cons of this approach." "Firstly, there is a lot of enthusiasm in local communities for Long Term Plans for Towns (LTPT) and a desire for their voices to be heard in shaping the plans." "Our first round of engagement indicated considerable scepticism about LTPTs, but in the second phase of consultation, the scepticism softened as they could see how their feedback had shaped the plan and we saw a much more positive response. Once people see their views reflected and feel heard in plans they feel more invested in them." "The main challenge we faced, though, was balancing the competing needs of formulating a long-term aspirational vision with deep seated frustration at current problems. In discussions in working men’s clubs, community halls and libraries, people argued passionately that fixing potholes, tackling litter and restoring law and order should be the plan’s main priority." "While there were plenty who wanted to push more imaginative interventions - from water features to smarter transport and events programmes, they were in the minority. The dominant community voices were those who wanted the basics tackled first." "To unleash brave, experimental and imaginative thinking, we need to create a viable future for all our towns. This will only happen when communities have assurance that the basic public services they all rely on are properly funded on a long term basis." A total of €62.4 million has been allocated to Transportation in Budget 2025. The Transportation Department focuses on optimising infrastructure and managing the planning, design, and maintenance of roads in County Meath. It aims to make active travel and public transport more appealing and accessible while fostering liveable and sustainable urban communities. Meath County Council receives funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the National Transport Authority, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Rural and Community Development, in addition to its own funds and specific grants. Governor Phil Murphy has announced $2.6 million in FY2025 Transit Village grants to support development projects in eight municipalities across five counties! The Transit Village Program creates a vibrant, walkable, and sustainable communities near transit hubs. These funds will help municipalities plan and develop mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods where residents can live, shop, work, and play—all while reducing reliance on cars. This initiative aligns with NJ TRANSIT's mission to enhance accessibility, improve quality of life, and promote smart growth across New Jersey. News release: Cold Lake First Nations and the City of Cold Lake Commit to the CEDI Program Cold Lake First Nations and the City of Cold Lake are proud to announce their participation in the Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI), a national program delivered jointly by Cando (the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Cold Lake First Nations and the City of Cold Lake are among five partnerships in the Prairies-region cohort selected to participate in CEDI from 2024 to 2027. This initiative supports First Nations and neighbouring municipalities in building respectful and equitable partnerships while enhancing capacity for joint long-term planning focused on community economic development and land use. “We are always looking for ways to strengthen our relationship with neighbouring communities,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “I am confident that our shared goals for local community and economic development will lead to positive outcomes for our region. The CEDI program provides a framework to collaborate effectively and achieve meaningful results.” Chief Kelsey Jacko of Cold Lake First Nations echoed the enthusiasm for this collaboration: “I am pleased to participate in this important initiative with Mayor Copeland and the City of Cold Lake. Working to address our shared economic challenges strengthens our relationship and the regional economy, ensuring we move forward positively in the spirit of reconciliation.” This partnership between Cold Lake First Nations and the City of Cold Lake acknowledges that long-term collaboration is built on a foundation of respect, trust, and cooperation. Nexus Analytics & Research is thrilled to learn that Barbican Centre has received funding for the first phase of the Barbican Renewal Programme. Working with our friends at MARK Placemaking we prepared the demographic and socio-economic baseline to understand the food & beverage appeal of the cultural icon. This helped underpin the business case and place-making efforts of the excellent Barbican Renewal Team. Put simply, we helped with defining who visits, why they visit, and how can we further broaden appeal…. A real feel-good project!
