Biomass pellets are a game-changer in the energy industry, offering sustainable solutions for power generation and rural electrification. Co-firing biomass pellets with coal in power plants not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also provides a cost-effective renewable power option. This approach is gaining momentum due to its relative ease of implementation and significant environmental benefits. Moreover, the use of biomass pellets for rural electrification presents a reliable and consistent energy source, helping to displace fossil fuels in remote areas. The successful conversion of several power plants from coal to biomass further demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of this transition. #biomassenergy #pine woodpellets

Nebraska Ethanol Board Chairman Jan tenBensel contributed to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s "2023 Billion-Ton Report: An Assessment of U.S. Renewable Carbon Resources" through his corn #ethanol case study. The report—the fourth in a series of assessments of potential biomass resources in the United States since 2005—finds that 1 billion tons of biomass could satisfy over 100% of the projected demand for airplane fuel in the country, allowing the U.S. to fully decarbonize the aviation industry with sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF). tenBensel is featured on page 23. With the growing need to find alternative solutions to produce renewable electricity, thermal energy, and fuels for transportation, it has become ever more important to develop technologies that utilize a renewable resource as the feedstock to support these industries. This renewable resource is designated as “biomass,” typically recognized as a biological material that can substitute for fossil fuels in the production of energy and other products. The use of biomass energy may greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making a positive impact on our atmosphere by lessening our dependence on climate change-inducing fossil fuels. However, as with fossil fuels, biomass presents its own set of challenges with regards to the management of potentially catastrophic hazards. Learn more in our new white paper, “Identifying Hazards Associated with Biomass Feedstocks”, authored by Alexandre Cardoso, P.Eng. and Philip J. Parsons: https://lnkd.in/ghdHaFFP. This is the final paper in our five-part white paper series on risk management for Biofuels. We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about each topic thanks to the insights from our team! By implementing a 9% carbon intensity reduction starting in 2025, CARB is signaling strong support for #RNG's role in displacing diesel, cutting methane emissions, and advancing zero-emission fuels. 🌿 CARB's latest Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) amendments substantially benefit the #biogas industry. Interesting highlights include: 🔹 Hydrogen Transition: Starting in 2030, hydrogen produced from fossil fuels will no longer be eligible for LCFS credits. This shift is expected to spur growth in renewable hydrogen projects, including those utilizing biogas, as California pushes to expand its supply of low-carbon hydrogen. 🔹 Incentives for Biomass-Based Diesel: The proposal introduces LCFS credits for biomass-based diesel derived from virgin soybean and canola oil up to 20% of annual diesel production. This change aims to promote the use of sustainably sourced biomass while aligning with the state's decarbonization goals. 🔹 Streamlined Sustainability Requirements: New regulations will enhance sustainability standards for biomass feedstocks, ensuring that the biomass used in fuel production does not come from recently converted lands. This is crucial for maintaining the environmental integrity of biogas operations. While challenges remain, including concerns about methane crediting periods, this move brings much-needed stability to California's #cleanenergy landscape. The future of #sustainable transportation is bright! 🌍💡 Learn more about the CARB's amendment process: https://lnkd.in/g4Y5iZFv View the proposed amendments for yourself below 🔗 #anaerobicdigestion #bioenergy #biofuels #wastetoenergy #wastetofuel #RNG #renewablenaturalgas #sustainableenergy #greenenergy

Drax Group (LSE:DRX) has been given the green light from the government to install carbon capture technology at its north Yorkshire biomass power plant. Energy secretary Claire Coutinho approved plans on Tuesday to retrofit two of Drax’s four wood-burning biomass units to house the technology at an estimated cost of £2 billion. According to Drax, the new technology will prevent eight million tonnes of carbon being emitted each year from the site, which provides around 4% of the UK’s power. Despite being generated by burning wood pellets, this energy is classed as renewable on the idea that the fuel absorbs and emits a neutral amount of carbon over its lifecycle. This has been disputed, however, with Drax’s power station being the UK’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide in 2020 - a year after the company switched to burning wood rather than coal.
