Building Ballpoint: the growth agency I always wanted to hire // Ex-startup founder of Wine List, first hire at Thriva // Newsletter writer // Loves incrementality, good copy, and social-first creative
When people say they pivot, how much do they really pivot? At Wine List, we pivoted, and it meant swapping bottles out for pouches of wine. A part of the process had changed but their mission was still the same. Tomorrow's newsletter I interview Seb Evans who today is the co-founder of Winedrops – a true pivot away from Banquist which they launched four years ago. This is a goldie for a few reasons: 1. Winedrops is a massive success – and if you know anything about wine market you'll respect that even more 2. It's a true pivot. Not like what most founders end up doing, but a real one 3. They've got a solid rigorous approach to business and acquisition that I'd consider should be best practice for anyone. Newsletter goes out at 7am. If you want to be first in line to read it, you know what to do

I write about monetizing content-led businesses, my journey as a soloprenuer, and copywriting. | 7-Figures made for Creators online.
I love cigars - for many reasons. What I enjoy most is the stories of each brand. This morning, I read the origin story of Arturo Fuente cigars, and from it came some profound revelations and reminders. Specifically, I took away 3 qualities every entrepreneur, solopreneur and high performer needs to be successful. 1) Resilience. Over the the 100+ year history of the Arturo Fuente brand, they suffered 3 different factory or farm fires that totally destroyed their business. The first one created a multi-decade gap to where Fuente couldn’t make his cigars anymore until much later in his life, where he began to unbury his dream that was drowning in the rubble of that first fire. Still, they never let these set backs force them into giving up. 2) Risk taking. Fuente was in Cuba when the murmurs of an embargo were swirling. He took a bold risk and purchased 3 YEARS worth of Cuban tobacco while he still could, and that gave the brand a long run way to figure out this next era of cigar making and put their brand at a huge advantage. Also, Carlos Fuente (son) was the first person to sell cigars to stores on credit - which was a risky sales strategy that revived the entire brand (after the second fire the company endured). 3) Reassurance. Carlos Fuente was working so many hours in the factory, he was living there for weeks on end away from his family. His wife said to him, “If you can’t make it home to see your wife and kids, we’ll come to you.” His family moved in with him in the top floor of the factory where they hand rolled each cigar in Tampa, FL. He had the reassurance from his support circle to continue pursuing this family dream. — The result? Fuente is one of the most recognizable and respected names in the cigar industry, and hand-rolls over 30 Million sticks a year. They kept his father’s dream alive amidst a crazy amount of challenges that came up along the way. As an ambitious individual, this was a great lesson, reminder, and source of encouragement for myself. If you’ve read this far I hope it is for you to. #entreprenuership #soloprenuer #creatoreconomy #branding

Porky Whites Managing Director | Family-Run and Owned UK Meat Manufacturer | Supreme Sausage Guru | Livery and Freeman of the City of London
Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery? As a small independent business, your brand is probably one of the most important attributes of your go-to-market strategy; it’s your identity, your values, your hard work, your innovation, your essence and often it’s a reflection of you. So when another brand looks to muscle in with a mirror image version, for me it’s more than business; it’s personal. For Porky Whites Ltd our brand stand for our heritage, family values and the promise of a great tasting sausage! It’s what our customers (new and regular) see, it tells our story and helps us stand out on the shelf and so protecting it from imposters and the try harder’s is mission critical. This recent piece from The Grocer on the battle between Jump Ship Brewing and BrewDog (https://lnkd.in/ePvv8_2f) is yet another important reminder that in business, imitation (in my opinion) goes beyond flattery and moves into the world of consequence. I’ve seen first-hand of how this copycat behaviour from brands and the discounters can impact not only your bottom line but your whole strategy and mental health. I’d love to hear (in the comments) about your experiences and how you’re battling to protect your own brand integrity from the imitators and copycats. https://lnkd.in/ePvv8_2f #IP #IntellectualProperty #BrandProtection #SmallBusiness #BusinessStrategy #ImitationInBusiness #ProtectYourBrand #OriginalityMatters #MarketDifferentiation #Entrepreneurship #BusinessSuccess #porkywhites

Consistency is the key to success with anything in life.
Really liked her message on consistency. She has a degree in entrepreneurship, worked for a while in the corporate world, then jumped to the construction world on her own property, and never looked back. HGTV host and Built Custom Homes founder Jasmine Roth did a Forbes Talks segment where she talked about what has fueled her success. The answer? Consistency. "And consistency is something that I think gets kind of lost in the shuffle, where people are like, 'well I've been working hard and why am I not seeing my efforts rewarded?’” Roth says. “It's usually that you're right around the corner from it; you just have to continue doing what you're doing and being consistent.” https://lnkd.in/g6PUx7MG
