Our hope at Midwest Food Bank is to bridge the gap between prosperity and poverty in our communities. It's not about being a modern-day Robin Hood; it's about our vision in action. To operate, MFB needs three key components: Food, Funding, and Volunteers. The genius of our business model lies in how we address these needs effectively. Food waste is a significant issue in the U.S., with nearly 40% of the food supply going to waste. MFB steps in to rescue this excess food, preventing it from being discarded. Foundations, Corporations, and Individuals seek out charities like MFB to contribute to, receiving tax benefits while supporting a cause they care about. Volunteers bring diverse skills to our mission, from truck drivers to marketing professionals, all playing a crucial role in our operations. Midwest Food Bank offers solutions to each group involved. Financial contributors see an impressive ROI of $1 - $30, with every $1 contribution translating into over $30 worth of food distributed. Thank you to Sarah Butler at the The Guardian for highlighting the problematic change to surplus food collections at Tesco through FareShare UK for small charities and VCS partners such as ours. Tesco now only releases it's surplus food at closing time making it impossible for the majority of us to redistribute the food as we all predominantly work daytime only. Whereas the other big supermarkets all continue - in London - to have daytime redistribution; i.e.; when volunteers are available to help with this work. Tesco's and Fareshare Go SHOULD have consulted their stakeholders which are the charities and VCS partners who collect and redistribute their food for free to those in need. Our views matter. To say that Olio will pick up the food if we cannot attend is not good enough. As the food is not redistributed to those most vulnerable and most of the waste ends up in the local authority waste stream subsidising the waste cost of Tesco when Food heroes from Olio are unable to redistribute everything that they pick-up when they go to do their collections. Interesting to read in the Propel morning briefing today that Greggs plans to expand its outlet store to 50 over the coming year. This has always seemed such a great way to use unsold product, selling them in the outlet store the next day for a large discount. It would be great to see other brands following suit alongside other great initiatives such as Too Good To Go. Below is an extract from the article about how much waste they managed to divert! In 2023, we diverted more than 2,600 tonnes of surplus food to our Outlet network — an increase of 44% from 2022. That’s more than 2.6 million sandwiches, 2.2 million savoury snacks, and 2.6 million sweet treats saved from the bin. For items left on the shelves, we donate them to our network of 956 local charities or Too Good To Go. Any surplus food not redistributed is sent to an anaerobic digestor. Today we are launching our manifesto ahead of the General Election, calling on the next Government to commit to delivering more surplus food to those in need. Titled “Where’s the Food? Strengthening Communities Through Surplus Food Redistribution”, the manifesto lays out measures to incentivise businesses to redistribute more of their surplus, proposals to support the redistribution sector and strengthen communities in the process, and a plan for a wider food system reset. For 20 years, Woolworths Group and their supply chain arm, Primary Connect, have been invaluable partners in helping feed people in need throughout Australia and we couldn't be more grateful. In addition to donating food and household items from distribution centres across the country, Primary Connect plays a crucial role as one of Foodbank SA & NT’s largest pro bono transport providers. Their support ensures pallets of food and essentials are regularly delivered to Foodbank SA & NT's new Food Hub and Warehouse operation in Darwin. Collective voices call out the Victorian Government, 48 frontline charities demand systemic action on food security! OzHarvest has submitted an open letter to the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Food Security, supported by 47 charity partners that collectively feed over 62,000 Victorians every month. The problem of food insecurity is immense and growing - addressing it requires systemic changes, it cannot be solved with more food relief alone. Collectively, we are calling on the Victorian Government to address food insecurity at its core by: 1. Reducing poverty and inequality  2. Improving housing and access  3. Ensuring food is affordable While funding for food relief will always be necessary to maintain an essential service for those experiencing food insecurity, more must be done.
