Attaining an Interim Certificate enables you to apply for restricted registration with AHPRA, leading to supervised practice and the subsequent stages: an online written exam and a clinical assessment to obtain the final certificate. ~Expedited Pathways for Qualified International Professionals~ International physiotherapists from select countries—Canada, Hong Kong, UK, Ireland, Singapore (must be Bachelor-level qualification), South Africa, and the Netherlands—can access expedited pathways if they hold entry-level physiotherapy qualifications from the specified countries and meet all the other Council requirements. To qualify, for the Eligibility Assessment the minimum criteria include: - To be an overseas qualified physiotherapist (with a minimum diploma-level qualification); AND - Meeting the educational/qualification requirement for (or already hold) registration without any restriction in your country of training, OR Able to legally practice without restriction in your country of training (if no regulatory body currently exists). To qualify, for expedited pathways candidates must meet all the following criteria: - Completed an entry-level physiotherapy qualification from the mentioned country respectively (see above). - Held registration without restriction with the relevant regulatory body within the past 5 years - Able to practice without any restrictions - Have an entry-level qualification that is diploma-level or higher* (*Singapore candidates must have completed a Bachelor-level degree) ~Visa Eligibility and Employer Search~ Beyond certification, additionally, you will need to fulfil the visa requirements for either a 407 or 482 visa. 5 misconceptions of young Physiotherapists: 1. Physiotherapist is a masseur - One of the most common misconceptions in the general public and with young colleagues just starting their education is that a Physiotherapist's job is to massage most of the time. A physiotherapist is not a masseuse and a physiotherapist's job is not a massage therapy. 2. It is easy to find a job as a Physiotherapist - This is a myth because hospitals lack medical personnel. A physiotherapist is not an essential part of hospital staff, at least not in the hospital manager's eyes so it is not as easy to find a job as it is for a doctor or nurse. 3. Sports clubs pay Physiotherapy staff high salaries - This is a myth because people think that in every sports club, you will get a wage as in Real Madrid or another elite football club. You will get a low salary in most minor league clubs and other less popular sports. 4. You will be appreciated as an expert in hospitals - This depends on the country but in most countries, physiotherapists are not as appreciated as you may think. Sometimes you will even feel disrespected by medical doctors. 5. You are going to open your practice and get rich fast - When you open your practice it is normal to think that you will have loads of patients and get rich fast. Who should be a Director of Rehab? I have been seeing numerous postings for Direct of Rehab and similar roles at high major schools and professional sport settings. Unfortunately, all of these roles mandate a physical therapy license in addition to other qualifications. While I believe that PT’s make great candidates for these roles, I do not understand why an ATC or DC can’t be eligible for these roles? ATC’s are trained in high level rehab and more importantly can cover the later stages of rehab before clearance for return to play. While the Chiropractic curriculum only has 1-2 classes in rehab, there are fellowships one can completes specific in rehab along with sports medicine (DACRB, DACBSP) to make one qualified.
