💥Transforming Adversity into Achievement💥 Back in 2015, I suffered from acute respiratory distress failure and both my lungs stopped working. I spent 10 days in a medically induced coma, experienced an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) unit, lost 45lbs, and lost the ability to walk and hold myself upright. Rather than succumbing to being a vegetable, I leveraged all of the principles I’ve learned from strength training, bodybuilding, powerlifting, and team sports to reinvent my fitness and reclaim my life. Fast forward to fall 2022, where I achieved a remarkable milestone: completing a full Ironman (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run) after just six months of training. This achievement symbolizes how far I've come from the crippling respiratory distress I once endured. Here are eight lessons I've learned along the way: 🤘 Body Weight Exercises Rule: Push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, and crunches epitomize true strength—moving your own body through space and time is paramount to heavy lifting or covering great distances. 🤘Balance and Coordination Can Be Trained: Much of the re-learning to walk process involved deliberately training balance. Approach balance like a muscle—it strengthens with focused practice. 🤘Count In 3s: After one rep or set, you're a third of the way there. Two reps or sets mean you're more than halfway—keeping you motivated. 🤘Meditation & Visualization Works With Consistency: Daily meditation and visualization empowered me to shape the reality I desired. Create an image in your mind of how you want to look/feel - then let your subconscious mind take over and shape your habits around that vision. 🤘Muscle Doesn’t Float: Swimming taught me that muscle alone won't keep you afloat; mastering balance in the water is crucial. 🤘Celebrate The Small Wins: The moment I regained enough strength to climb stairs without assistance, my first successful pull-up, completing my initial set of 10 push-ups, conquering the first mile—all these seemingly minor triumphs brought tears to my eyes. Remember, celebrating these small wins is just as crucial as acknowledging the major milestones. 🤘Deliberately Track Your Progress: Documenting my journey helped me see my growth firsthand—each step forward was monumental. 🤘Bench Press Safety Tip: A close call taught me to bench press without clips when lifting alone, ensuring I could safely bail out if needed. Tough Mondays? I love my 12pm sessions on Mondays and Fridays to break the day while working from home. Reason I love the gym: 1) Training my mind that rewards are not instant. 2) Reminder that "the process" works. Whether it's sales, recruitment, or back when I was a teacher. 3) Better Health = Better life = better performance at work and daily life. I don't want to be 50 years old with back problems. For me, it's not about my physical image or for getting other people's approval. These things come and go. About two years back, during a routine morning jog, someone approached me and while conversing, he introduced himself as a gym instructor and mentioned that he would love to work with me to get fit. Further engagement with him proved that he knew his onions and understood body statistics. He took a look at me and accurately guessed my weight and told me what my BMI should be, and he was spot on. The last time I had weighed anything around 60KG (which is my ideal weight), was when I was in the university. I got back home and told a friend about my experience, he laughed and said, “They have used numbers & expertise to bamboozle you ba, see as the man don get you.” Long story short, I decided to give him a trial and I signed up with him. This brings me to the first point– KNOW YOUR JOB WELL. Whatever your skill/trade is, be so good at knowing the details that people know that you know it. That was the first thing that sold me on his potentials. His expertise on body metrics was really good. Fast-forward to a few days later, we started working out together and would run a few laps before heading to the open facility he used for his training sessions. The first few days went well, however, I noticed that he would use harsh demotivating statements like, “See how big and flappy your arms are? Are you proud of it? Work it off!” Statements like these were the order of the day. While I understood that it was supposed to be a spur to make people train harder, it was becoming counter-productive for me because it sounded like I needed to dislike how a part of my body looked for me to work on it, or there was a standard to loving one’s body. I pointed this out to him on few occasions and after a while, I realized there was no change, and he wasn’t making an effort to improve. I knew our work relationship may not be for long. He needed to learn to be FLEXIBLE. This is such a hard skill to learn, even I struggle with this. The path of what has always worked, versus the risks of the new path. However, I have come to realize that the people/ organizations that will stay thriving in today’s dynamic world must stay open to reinventing the wheel to remain relevant. What has always worked, may no longer work, and it is our business to keep searching for what will work. Stay tuned for part two of this unfolding journey.
