CEO & Chairman of Hagerty (NYSE: HGTY). Also, past YPO Board Chairman, great idea hunter and car lover.
Recently, Hagerty leaders from around the country gathered at our home base in City of Traverse City, Michigan City, Michigan, for a few days of face-to-face learning and camaraderie, which is incredibly valuable in this age of Zoom meetings and dispersed workforces. Hagerty is celebrating 40 years in business this year, so we spent a few moments reflecting on where we’ve been, but the bulk of our time was spent on where we’re going. Will the collectible car hobby continue to grow? And what will Hagerty’s role be? Our assessment: the future is incredibly bright for both Hagerty and the hobby. Sixty-seven million people in the U.S. describe themselves as car enthusiasts. They own 46 million collectible vehicles, worth more than a trillion dollars. And yet there is only one company whose sole purpose is to help them buy, sell, protect, and enjoy the cars they love. Thank you to everyone on One Team Hagerty. You are the engine that drives us forward. Also, thank you to our members, partners and everyone out there who simply can’t get enough of cars. We’re honored to serve you. #hagerty #cars #classiccars #hgty #business #leadership #workplaceculture

With #Boeing sloughing off its senior leadership echelons in another attempt to sort itself out, this January commentary from the excellent Bill George at #Harvard provides crucial history of the company's downfall (it's less profane than the exposé by #JohnOliver on a recent edition of #LastWeekTonight). Where would Boeing be if it had appointed Alan Mulally rather than #JimMcNerney? Would Alan have done at Boeing what he went on to do at #Ford? https://lnkd.in/g-4X3SPC Important lessons for all leaders and organisations, being penny wise and pound foolish is not a recipe for safety and success.

Frankly, I love to see these moments of reckoning. This highlights a critical inflection point for the prevailing leadership style that has dominated corporate America (particularly the Jack Welch era at GE, where Calhoun spent nearly three decades). I look forward to seeing more diverse and evolved leadership styles to navigate the incredible complexities organizations, like Boeing, face. For more on Calhoun's resignation, see the WSJ article linked below. https://lnkd.in/gM3fMgFf

Building something truly great requires understanding what truly matters. This hilarious satire from BMW and Mercedes Benz drives home a crucial point: - As entrepreneurs, we must create solutions that we'd use ourselves. If we settle for less, we're admitting our product isn't the best fit. - Our product is a reflection of our values, so let's focus on crafting solutions that bring ease, relief, and joy to both ourselves and our customers. - By prioritizing solutions we believe in, we can create something that truly solves our target audience's needs - and our own. #productexcellence #entrepreneurmindset #innovation #entrepreneurs

Chapter 9 of Dave Alpern’s 📕 has me thinking about what Joe Gibbs Racing identified as “The Most Important Question”. It reminded me of a business school case study I’d read years ago profiling Southwest Airlines (I had to Google which airline) and their mantra of “Wheels Up.” Basically it connected every employee’s commitment to achieving whatever needed to be done in order to get planes ✈️ ready to depart and get back in the air. They weren’t making money while the craft were grounded. So everyone’s focus had to be on getting the wheels up (and off the ground). Similarly, JGR leadership challenges themselves, and their team to answer the question, “Does this make us go fast?” It underpins every financial and strategic decision. I don’t have a lot of time or 💰 available for my race craft; so, instead of worrying about keeping up appearances or trying to look the part, it seems like a more worthwhile and focusing exercise for little guys like us is just to concentrate on the things that’ll help us go fast too. #BuildingSpeed
