Its great to see so many people turn to video for building a brand. But effective video production is a skill. Here are 5 critical things to remember while making a video. 1. Framing- In the video below, we have a classic example of a close-up gone wrong. There is too much head space or space above the head and the face is somewhere in the bottom. What you should be doing is make sure that your body takes up most of the space in the video frame. The head space should be narrow. 2. Use a tripod so the video is steady. A bobbing frame is distracting and makes your viewers scroll away. 3. Also give a lot of importance to the audio. Your voice should be clear with minimum distracting noise. Buy a good unidirectional Mike for recording videos. You can use software that eliminates the noise too. 4. Try to keep the background muted. Make sure you have a solid background. Definitely avoid stuff like ceiling fans and a bright light in the background. 5. Keep the video script short and succinct. Start with a hook and make sure your script keeps your viewer engaged. End with a CTA. Keep shooting yourself and do it well! Please drop the softwares, apps or AI tools you use to make your videos stand out from the noise. I use Loom a lot. All I do is type in my script and record video using Loom! #videoproduction #scriptwriting #video #videoforpersonalbranding

At The Urban Butler we support ASTRA (Australia and New Zealand Short Term Rental Accommodation Association) in their mission to professionalise the short-term rental industry through a national registration and code of conduct, here in New Zealand. This logical first step will allow accurate data to be used in determining what a workable ‘bed tax’ might look like.
Last week I had the pleasure of catching up with BusinessDesk NZ to discuss ASTRA (Australia and New Zealand Short Term Rental Accommodation Association)'s stance on regulation in New Zealand and learnings from Australia. The article pulls together a lot of information and stakeholders, essentially the sentiment is the same. We need a national system that includes registration and a code of conduct to professionalise the industry and provide data that can be used to inform decision making. ASTRA also advocates for a true 'Tourist/Bed Tax' and one essentially where the cost that can be passed through to the consumer. This was the moment my eyes popped wide open and my mind was totally blown! I have always thought of public policy work as solving problems or pushing back on some unfavorable policies. But, it’s really the wrong way to think about my work. Lesson #5 - run your public policy programs like political campaigns! Some of the most important questions we need to answer when trying to run a campaign include: - what do we stand for (vs what our opposition stands for)? - who will be representing us? The CEO/MD? The Policy Lead? - do we have the financial resources and the manpower to campaign for a sustained period of time? - what are the polls telling us about our client/employer? (polling is a must-have) - can we mobilize the grassroots? - what is our media - both on and offline - strategies? - what does success look like? And what’s the timeline to achieve it? We are living in a highly polarized and politicized world these days. You can never achieve your policy goals with short-term, knee-jerk, reactive, middle of the pack, fly under the radar… (list goes on) approaches. Only a sustained, well thought-out and well-financed campaign approach where we take the fight to our opponents will work. (The photo below was taken when we mobilised Airbnb hosts in Perth to turn up at the airport on the first day Western Australia reopened its border in 2022. We wanted to show everyone that our hosts were ordinary folks eager to offer their hospitality to the world now that travel has resumed. As many of you know, my husband is from County Leitrim, (a province of Connacht in the North West region of Ireland). This County is dubbed ‘Lovely Leitrim” for its beautiful landscape of surrounding lakes, rivers, and drumlin hills. Over the years, his Irish heritage has woven itself into the fabric of our lives, influencing our interactions and how we approach work and communication. Growing up in Ireland, my husband was steeped in a culture rich with storytelling, warmth, and a strong sense of community. These values have undoubtedly shaped his outlook on life, and in turn, have left an indelible mark on our partnership and professional collaborations. Building genuine connections is one aspect of Irish culture that resonates deeply with us. In Ireland, conversation isn't merely a means of exchanging information; it's an art form, a dance of words where listening is as important as speaking. This emphasis on active listening has strengthened our relationship and proven invaluable in our professional endeavors. Furthermore, the Irish love for storytelling has taught us the importance of using narratives in communication. As a result, we strive to incorporate compelling narratives that resonate on a human level into our work. Perhaps most importantly, this has taught us to be adaptable and resilient. The Irish have weathered their fair share of storms throughout history, yet they emerge with an unwavering spirit and a sense of humor. This resilience is a guiding light in our personal and professional lives, reminding us to approach challenges with optimism and determination. As we celebrate St. Patrick's Day and reflect on the richness of Irish culture, I'm reminded of the profound impact it has had on our lives. From fostering deeper connections to infusing our work with creativity and resilience, Irish heritage continues to shape how we navigate the world.
