Feelgood Friday - What’s my name again? So, those who’ve known me a long time, and those who met me this week at Collaborate MK know that I’m passionate about getting people’s names right. It’s part of our identity. If I’m talking to you, it’s only common courtesy for me to try and pronounce your name correctly. It’s about respect, valuing you. Taking the time to actually see you. If I get it wrong, what message does that send? In addition there’s a nice campaign towards tech companies to ensure that the autocorrect dictionary gets updated with newer names. The reason for this is that when someone types their name and they get the squiggly line indicating it’s a typo, or even worse, autocorrected to another word, that has the same effect, of making them feel excluded and “othered”. And a lot of newer names are not in the autocorrect dictionary. So let’s change that. Look it up, it’s a campaign called I am not a typo. #IAmNotATypo So, what’s my name again? #DiversityandInclusion #Inclusion #Leadership #GlobalAndInclusive

DEI has a communication problem. We often hear from our clients how some of their employees feel “allergic” to the term. They think DEI is “irrelevant” for them. They think DEI is “overly woke”. They think DEI is “boring”. They think DEI is “fluffy” But what this tells us is that DEI work is still largely misunderstood. And it is no wonder, as - DEI is often spoken about with complex language and jargon. - DEI is often spoken about in language that pits different groups against each other. - DEI is often pushed strongly as an agenda without create room for open discussion. - DEI is often discussed solely from the angle of boosting innovation, retention, and talent attraction, which are not the key priorities of employees. At its core, DEI is about meeting the basic employee needs of every individual within the organization. This means ensuring physical safety, feeling a sense of belonging to the team, being able to be yourself at work, freedom from discrimination and harassment, and fair compensation. It is time to move away from vague and abstract notions and communicate DEI goals and benefits through what your employees truly care about. This workshop sounds brilliant! I can't think of a better way to learn how to perform in ways that keeps in touch with yourself and resonates with others. I always find the pitch and intonation of my voice in English so much higher than when I speak in German. How to bring both closer together – in tune?
When it comes to your identity at work, your voice matters. Whether you're giving presentations, negotiating over the phone, or engaging in discussions at work, the sound you make is a powerful tool for connection, expression and influencing. Harness the power of your voice this Autumn in our brand new voice workshop: The Voice, Creativity, and the Workplace. https://ow.ly/BjYY50Rit9A Contact Emily for more details e.kyte@tavinstitute.org
