In 2022, I made the decision to step down after a decade as an Airline Captain. Many struggle to grasp my choice to leave the comfortable and lucrative role behind. What led to this significant change? Here are the key reasons: 1. Lack of mentorship: The lack of mentorship had a profound impact on my career path. Proper guidance could have steered me towards a more hands-on role like corporate flying. It took me 10 years in the airlines to realize that this path wasn't for me. 2. The environment: The corporate politics and limited impact within a large organization left me frustrated. Ultimately, I recognized the influence of my environment on my growth and knew a change was necessary. 3. My self-worth: Upon reflection, I discovered that my value went beyond my role as a captain. It lay in my skills and personal qualities, not just in the title I held. These insights drove me to transition from the world of airlines and unions to becoming the CEO of First Class Leaders a company focused on helping pilots understand how their worth extends well beyond the boundaries of the flight deck. I'm not saying that airlines are not great places to work. What I am saying is that the airlines did not align with my values or my goals. Learn who you want to be and what you value. Then find the environment that aligns with those values so that you can thrive!
