Building engaged, future-ready workforces through people strategy, career and skill development, and change management.
In my last post, I highlighted the divergent paths that my daughters are taking: one to a 4-year university and one to a technical (trade) school. Today the WSJ published this article stating that more GenZers are considering a trade, although their parents are not all on board. GenZ is not convinced that traditional university is worth the investment, and are exploring options that will reduce student loan debt, provide hands-on learning for a high-demand profession, and get them to work faster than a 4-year program. I love that young adults are exploring the options available to them, facilitated by high school exposure to a variety of programs, and making the decision that best suits them. And for those who pursue the 4-year university route, I have one word of advice: Internship! Article can be accessed via WSJ or Apple News subscription. #girlsinstem #girlsintech #techschool

We’re continuing to share insights from the Blue Star Leadership Team on their journey and what’s ahead for them personally and the business. 5 minutes with Brebner Print General Manager - Ricky Howes. 1️⃣ What was your first role at Blue Star Group? I started with Brebner Print in 1995 as a machinist/folder operator, eventually taking on an apprenticeship in Print Finishing. 2️⃣ What are some of the major highlights of your career to date? In my 28 years at Brebner Print I have been fortunate to be part of such a hardworking and loyal team with a great culture, highlights include winning the National Print Finisher Apprenticeship title in 2000, year on year gold medal success at the Pride in Print awards, successfully implementing the stamp business from Southern Colour Print into Brebner Print and building strong relationships within the wider Blue Star team, all of the challenges and rewards make my journey an enjoyable experience. 3️⃣ What have been the biggest learnings/learning experiences? Without a doubt, navigating the previous 4 years with COVID and cyclone Gabriella has been the most challenging time of my career to date, it has been a privilege to lead our team through the associated challenges and I continue to be amazed at the resilience and fortitude shown by our team. 4️⃣ What excites you about the future for NZ businesses and Blue Star? Being part of a progressive and adaptable business in Blue Star is truly a rewarding experience, our people and values are what make us stand out from our competitors and I am proud to be working for a company that prioritises this. 5️⃣ If you could go back and give yourself 1 piece of advice, it would be…… I would remind myself to live in the now and appreciate each and every moment for what it is. #bluestarnz #peopleleader #makingithappen

Good Evening to all my connections.....!! It has been a long duration ( more than 6 months ) of inactivity on my Linkedin Account. I have completed one year of my course at CUH Campus. Really time slips very fast, however in the past six months and before that as well, the sort of experiences I have been through are really ineffaceable. 1. How a schoolboy transformed as a college student...!! 2. How a shy schoolboy turned to the stage lover.......! 3. The journey of Extrovert or more accurately say, Ambivert from hard core introvert. 4. The journey of Team Leader from the belief of Individualism. In this way, there are many more learnings that I have gone through during my exile of 6 months (approx.). I know I have committed mistake; it would have been better if I could update you all about these moments back then only. Nevertheless, now I will try to take you all through these moments of first year of B.Tech. Best wishes....!!

The Serendipitous Side of Success: My Career’s Unexpected Twists 🌟 My career has been a testament to the fact that hard work and meticulous planning are only part of the success equation. The other, often overlooked, part is serendipity. After diving into an HBR article on the role of luck in our careers, I’ve been mulling over the ‘fortunate accidents’ that have nudged my professional journey in exciting directions. Here’s how I’ve seen ‘luck’ play out in my career: The Power of Personal Connections: Sometimes, opportunities come from unexpected places. My current role at Roehl Transportation is a prime example. It came about thanks to a conversation my dad had with the owner. This experience has shown me how personal connections can lead to unexpected opportunities. Welcoming Change with Open Arms: I’ve worn many hats - from a Kwik Trip employee to a digital marketing intern - and each switch brought its own set of lessons and opportunities. It’s like every new role was a key unlocking a door to the next adventure. Sharpening Skills That Travel Well: I’ve honed abilities that are universal currency in the job market. This versatility has been my career’s Swiss Army knife, equipping me for roles I hadn’t even envisioned. Following My Gut: The best chances are often hidden, waiting to be discovered. When I took the internship at Floortapestore.com - the only gig available at the time - little did I know it would be a game-changer. I’ve come to realize that ‘being lucky’ isn’t just about being in the right place at the right time. It’s about being open-minded and prepared when opportunity knocks. What about you? Have you ever stumbled upon an opportunity that felt like a stroke of luck? How do you invite serendipity into your career? #CareerLuck #OpenMindedness #CareerJourney #Networking #SkillBuilding #uwspMBA #BUS703 #SENTRYSCHOOL Lyna Matesi

Embracing the Toolbelt Generation! Gen Z is reshaping the workforce landscape as they gravitate towards trades. More young individuals are opting for hands-on careers, bypassing traditional college paths. Rising pay and cutting-edge technologies are giving these trades a shiny new appeal. It's not just about fixing pipes or wires anymore - it's about embracing innovation and making a tangible impact. As disenchantment with the college track grows, the Toolbelt Generation is carving their own path to success, one skill at a time. Today I spoke with students at Varina High School's Media and Communications Center, where I shared my personal brand, what it's like storytelling for a living at CarMax, and how students should think of their futures. Here are three takeaways from that talk: 1. College is not a means to an end; it's a journey. Study what interests you or you won't be invested in the experience. 2. Expect frequent career changes (especially true these days). 3. You aren't supposed to know exactly who you are or where you are going at this age. I will expound on #1 here as an article some time, especially in regard to pressure on kids to choose certain majors.

CEO at TCK Training/Unstacking Co. Third Culture Kid Expert. International keynote speaker. Author of several books on raising Third Culture Kids and the Grief Tower Model.
I'm learning to be okay with saying that I'm proud of something I've created. I'm great at celebrating other people's accomplishments (we have a great culture of celebration at TCK Training!) but not my own. In the past, I worried that people would think I was bragging or being egotistical - two things I never want to be associated with. So I would downplay - "It's not that great." "It's really not a big deal." "Let's celebrate what YOU did! We don't need to celebrate my stuff." and while I always want to show up from a place of humility, I'm learning that celebrating something that I poured myself into creating isn't contrary to humility. So here it goes. Of anything I've created in my career, I think this may be my very favorite - at least for the moment. It is a cumulation of 10 years of my professional work, but also 10 years of growing as a person, as a leader, as a wife and mom. My heart and soul were poured into these pages. Every word was carefully chosen. This book embodies everything that I am passionate and want to leave as a legacy. And I am really proud of it. I cannot wait for you to read it.
