📢A call to action: The UK needs stronger laws to end forced labour in supply chains
Anti-Slavery International is urging the UK Government to take an important step: introduce laws to ban the import of goods linked to forced labour.
👉Here’s why this is crucial:
We want to live in a world where workers are paid fairly, can work freely in dignified conditions and leave a job when they want. In 2021, The International Labour Organization estimated that over 21 million people were in forced labour, either at the hands of private sector actors or government. Many of these people work in industries connected to the UK.
The UK Modern Slavery Act 2015, with its Transparency in Supply Chains provision (TISC), was seen as a landmark legislative effort to address modern slavery in supply chains. But, in practice, it has not meaningfully changed corporate behaviour or succeeded in eradicating modern slavery from the UK’s global supply chains.
We all want to buy goods knowing that nobody has been harmed in making them. But the UK is increasingly at risk of becoming a dumping ground for goods made with forced labour. It doesn’t have to be like this, many other countries are exploring import controls. Now, the UK must do the same.
👉The solution?
The UK needs stronger laws that hold companies accountable and drive remedy for workers who have experienced harm. This is more than a policy change—it’s a necessary move to protect human rights and ensure ethical practices in global trade.
Our briefing document outlines the rationale behind this call, as well as the elements that the proposed law must include:
