More than 7 million older Americans struggle with substance use disorder (SUD), with skyrocketing rates of opioid overdose deaths among people aged 65 and older. Yet, unlike state Medicaid programs, Medicare does not cover non-hospital based residential SUD treatment or outpatient treatment in many community based treatment facilities, or the full spectrum of provider services. Because Medicare is not subject to the landmark Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, passed in 2008, many Medicare beneficiaries (especially those on fixed incomes) are left without access to life-saving SUD treatment. "Investing in addiction treatment and prevention is not only a moral imperative but also an economic one. The costs associated with untreated addiction—such as healthcare expenses, lost productivity, and criminal justice costs—far outweigh the costs of funding comprehensive addiction programs. According to a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, every dollar spent on addiction treatment programs yields a return of between $4 and $7 in reduced drug-related crime, criminal justice costs, and theft. When healthcare savings are included, total savings can exceed costs by a ratio of 12 to 1. The addiction crisis in the United States requires a bold and coordinated response from lawmakers. Implementing tax-funded programs for prevention, treatment, recovery support, and harm reduction is a crucial step in addressing this public health emergency. By allocating the necessary resources and enacting supportive policies, lawmakers can help reduce the devastating impact of addiction on individuals, families, and communities. The time for action is now, and the investment in these programs will pay dividends in the form of healthier, more resilient communities." #OpioidCrisis #AddictionTreatment #OverdoseCrisis

"A robust addiction treatment apparatus requires several sturdy components to work in harmony: not only treatment options that are available, affordable and effective but also harm reduction programs to help those who aren’t ready for recovery and law enforcement that’s prepared to deploy public health solutions when confronted with drug- or addiction-related crises. Too often, however, one of those components is too anemic to do its part, or another becomes so flush — or so suddenly popular — that it displaces all the others." This is a very comprehensive perspective on the multi-faceted challenges and opportunities associated with confronting the substance use epidemic in our country. Worth a read.

Urgent: Over Half of Americans Struggling with Addiction Lack Treatment 🚨A recent KFF survey unveils a troubling reality: less than half of those battling addiction, especially opioids, get the help they need. With over 110,000 drug overdose fatalities recorded last year, this issue demands our immediate attention. 30% of our population is addicted to opioids. Despite effective medications like buprenorphine and methadone, only a quarter receive treatment. This affects all Americans, regardless of background, with rural and white communities hit hardest. Income plays a role too, with lower-income households facing more addiction. We must act now, ensuring everyone has access to support. #AddictionAwareness #EndTheStigma [Read more by Noah Weiland: https://lnkd.in/gaYmz93e

A recent article released by National Institutes of Health highlighted the need for greater education, training, and policies to increase adoption of evidence-based care for addiction among physicians. “Developing new addiction treatments is crucial, but it is equally important to rigorously study how to implement these treatments so that they make it into the doctor’s office and reach the people who need them." We are dedicated to empowering individuals struggling with addiction, fostering hope through education, and collaborating with healthcare providers and communities to create a path towards recovery. "The moral case for resolving this crisis should be more than enough by itself. Addiction ruins lives, destroys families, devastates entire communities. Drug overdoses have killed more Americans in the past 24 years than all U.S. wars combined, and the annual death toll is rising still. We could prevent many of those deaths and alleviate so much attendant suffering with the knowledge and resources already at our disposal. But for those not persuaded by moral arguments, there’s also a practical case to be made. Closing the addiction treatment gap would be the most fiscally responsible way to manage the nation’s opioid addiction and overdose crises, which cost upward of a trillion dollars each year in lost productivity, criminal justice, emergency medicine and more." #harmreduction Workit Health

Given the inadequacy and underperformance of many existing addiction treatment models, which these letters to the editor provide a sense of, more local governments should seriously consider decriminalizing natural #psychedelics, which have a strong track record of liberating people from #addiction when taken in a therapeutic or ceremonial setting with a qualified guide. 25 cities and 2 states have done so; the first, Denver, nearly five years ago. The calamity that people feared would result has yet to materialize, though there have been some ER visits and hospitalizations, which we have to accept to some degree as part of the learning curve of incorporating these medicines into our society. #drugpolicy #opioids #fentanyl #Kensington #Philadelphia #DecriminalizeNature #healthinsurance #addictionrecovery #addictiontreatment #addictionsupport
