❓ Why are so many voices in healthcare still going unheard, especially those from marginalized communities? In global health, a glaring imbalance persists. Despite significant contributions, researchers and patients from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) often find themselves overshadowed by their counterparts from high-income countries. A recent study analyzed 1,269 articles in prestigious journals and found that positions of influence were overwhelmingly dominated by men from high-income countries, even in research focused on LMICs. This dominance marginalizes local voices, creating a knowledge gap that reinforces health inequities. Dr. Rageshri Dhairyawan points out that this issue extends beyond academia. In healthcare settings, minoritized patients are often stereotyped, leading to devastating outcomes like delayed diagnoses and treatment. For instance, Black women in the UK are four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women due to biases in the system. The ripple effects are far-reaching. When researchers and patients from marginalized backgrounds are silenced, critical perspectives are lost, limiting our collective understanding. To address this, Dhairyawan urges us to include patients in decision-making and research, showing genuine willingness to listen and act on their input. We need healthcare that values every voice, where listening is prioritized as a tool for healing and equity. Are we truly ready to challenge these systemic biases? The path to meaningful change requires amplifying these silenced voices to build a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system. After another excellent Schwartz Round at The Royal Children's Hospital yesterday, I’m pondering the question of how we can best support each other knowing that we all feel uncertain, a lot of the time. We heard from three inspiring women who shared some of their experiences with uncertainty in their various roles of healthcare. We acknowledged the fact that it’s normal and acceptable to feel uncertain and found solidarity in that. Naturally my mind went to how we treat each other in times of uncertainty. I don’t have the answers - but I have some ideas: 💡 Allow others to feel uncertain (when safe to do so) 💡 Hold space for uncertainty- everything can’t be ‘fixed’ right away 💡 Don’t judge - we’re all uncertain sometimes #schwartzround #healthcare #wellbeingatwork

There was a time when talking about women's health was taboo, wrapped in silence. Everyone suffers silently and ignores the common experience we all share. This story of Rose, one of our panelists in the upcoming event- #CycleofStrengths, can empower many women struggling to understand how to manage menopausal symptoms or their cycle generally. Rose, is a remarkable woman whose journey exemplifies the power of tuning into one's own body. In 2003, as Rose approached menopause, a phase often clouded by stigma and silence, she discovered 5Rhythms, a movement meditation practice that encourages flowing with physical changes rather than resisting them. By 2010, Rose was not only practicing but teaching 5Rhythms. She embraced her body's messages during menopause with acceptance and grace, using her insights to help others navigate their transformations. Today, Rose leads workshops on the menstrual cycle, menopause, and the serene grace of post-menopause, helping women reclaim their power at every stage of life. This story of empowerment is just a glimpse of what we'll explore at the Cycle of Strengths: A Women's Health Forum at the University of Bradford on October 29.
