I recently attended the NRA Show in Chicago with my partner, Scott Schmitz. It was an invigorating experience engaging with entrepreneurs and company leaders, discussing innovative concepts and products in the foodservice industry. Many of these leaders were on the quest to crack the code of foodservice. Key concerns highlighted by industry experts include: - Sales Strategy: Do you go to the distributor or to the operator, first? Generally, go to the operator. Distributors want to know the item will sell enough volume, so the warehouse slot is profitable. - Pricing Tactics: When going to the operator, make sure you price your product properly, include distributor margin. When you do get a distributor, the move for the operator is painless. - Logistics Management: Address all supply chain aspects for scalability and provide clear freight cost benchmarks. - Marketing Approach: Practice the adage, “sell the sizzle, not the steak.” Point-of-sale materials that speak to foodservice are needed. This gives your audience (think chefs and operators) an idea of how your product will fit on their menu.
