Employees at remote worksites have traditionally had limited access to mental health care. To address this, the JGC Fluor Corporation Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) team partnered with Workplace Options to ensure both physical and #psychologicalsafety on their worksite in BC, Canada. They launched the MIND your Health initiative to implement mental health support and off-set the risk factors of working and living in a remote, mega-project environment. Love how this post talks about "recognising the interconnectedness of individual and social factors in shaping people’s experiences" at work. Workplaces do need to recognise that we bring the totality of ourselves to work, which can't help but impact on our performance, motivation and interactions from time to time. Hiding ourselves or difficult things we are experiencing because we don't feel safe to experience normal human emotions (particularly for a prolonged period of time) damages not just the individual but the team and workplace. Psychosocial safety encourages compassion for our shared humanity and facilitates opportunities to show up authentically. It empathetically accommodates us when we are at our most amazing, productive selves as well as when we are vulnerable, distressed or distracted by things happening in our workplaces and in our lives.
What is Psychosocial Safety? Psychosocial safety is a goal achieved by workplaces (or social settings) that successfully foster psychological health and safe social interactions. It recognises that a person’s wellbeing is not solely determined by their internal psychological state but the social dynamics, relationships, and support systems in their environment. While psychological safety focuses on individuals feeling safe to express themselves and take interpersonal risks, psychosocial safety expands that concept to include broader social factors that impact an individual’s wellbeing. It regards the combination of psychological, occupational and social safety in the workplace—including factors such as work environment, job design, organisational culture, and management practices that can all impact employees' mental health and wellbeing. Recognising the interconnectedness of individual and social factors in shaping people’s experiences, the psychosocial safety field seeks to improve the overall social environment, emphasising the importance of creating a supportive, inclusive and healthy environment for all. Under the WHS Act, your duty as an officer in your organisation is to take reasonable steps to both develop and maintain your knowledge of psychological and physical health and safety matters as well as understand the nature of your organisation’s operations and the associated hazards and risks Our Health Check, strength and gap analysis helps you ensure your organisation has, implements and uses appropriate resources and processes to eliminate or minimise risks; to receive, consider and respond to information regarding incidents, hazards and risks; to comply with your WHS duties and obligations; and to verify the provision and use of these resources and processes.
