This article from Attitude Magazine yesterday really hit me in many ways. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve been very fortunate to not only work in many safe and supportive work environments, but help build and drive them too. I also recognise that this is not the reality for many. Recent research reveals that a staggering 86% of LGBTQ+ professionals don't feel safe being themselves at work, and 44% experience depression. I think this is such a shame in 2024 and have always been an advocate of that if you can be your true self personally at work then you will bring your best self professionally. These stats are a stark reminder of the challenges our community continues to face and it’s crucial that we work together to create inclusive, supportive workplaces where everyone can thrive without fear. It’s my view that employers should commit to create environments where authenticity is celebrated, and mental health is prioritised.
