Having the chance to make submissions on proposed legislation (and local district plans) changes is important. I sharing your ideas is only one part, I think the more important part of participating is to listen to what other submitters are saying. That way you can hear concerns or suggestions you haven't considered which hopefully leads to each of us seeing ways to improve legislation and plans. My latest submission was on the Resource Management (Extended Duration of Coastal Permits for Marine Farms) Amendment Bill. My presentation on 24 June starts at 1h11m https://lnkd.in/gCSSVaEa Key points for me from other submitters were: differences in how fin fish (say salmon) and shellfish (say mussels) are impacting both negatively and positively on the environment; the good processes for reviewing consents though opportunities to streamline them further; the great data that farmers and monitoring authorities have could be shared better for other farmers and wider community to benefit from; and, changes in farming methods over the years and how much has improved. This all leads me to believe that individual consents do need to be reviewed (using improved processes) rather than a blanket extension for all operators.

The agricultural industry has made great strides in improving farm safety. OSHA data shows farmworker injury rates have dropped 43% since 1992! But it remains essential to stay vigilant. Following restricted entry intervals (REIs) after spraying is critical, as it allows chemical residues time to fully disperse before re-entry. The most effective farm managers make safety a top priority. They strategically schedule activities, post clear signage, require protective gear, and more. Responsible chemical use protects workers and benefits the bottom line. Tracking REIs on whiteboards is outdated and risky for many operations.
