This year will mark my 40th year in the automotive service sector of the automotive industry. I’ve spent time in specified repairs such as transmissions. Independent “mom & pop” shops. And dealerships. In all that time I have never seen such a shortage in willing/marginally qualified entry level mechanics as I have in the last 5 years. I can’t hire a former pizza delivery guy to work on a $100k vehicle. Nor can I pay a tech school graduate with no experience $50 per hour to do oil changes. The mentality of upper management is to fill the lift no matter the cost because an empty lift makes no money. Several of my colleague’s are getting out of the business because they’ve been forced to chase these kids around as if they’re new job role is hurding cats. The seasoned technicians are forced to carry the weight with complicated diagnostics or major repairs because ther is no one left to give it to. Meanwhile these overpaid inexperienced kids get all of the jobs that pay the flat rate hours they have not yet put the time in to deserve. This is leading to a surge of experienced “old school” technicians leaving for the private sector. All of that being said, at what point will manufacturers, dealer principals, general and service managers stop being reactive and start being proactive? Most likely when CSI actually hits them in their own wallet and not that of technicians!

Good Morning and Happy Testimonial Tuesday! Let’s continue sharing the great opportunities of this Industry. I was blessed to start as a parts driver and learn the parts counter. I moved up quickly to Assistant Manager and then Manager. Was extremely grateful to keep my job, as I backed into a custom Mustang and ripped off the carbon fiber hood second day on the job 😳 I was recruited from parts and got to taste the service side of the business. I was an operations manager for an onsite fleet repair company. I got to learn the repair side from small pickups to hydrolic boom repairs and 18 wheelers. I was able to bring my parts knowledge to help train the importance of getting all parts needed and message how critical it affected productivity for having a technician on site without all parts. I was hooked on the challenges and had a hunger for the knowledge. Learning how to negotiate with National Fleets was a great experience for building confidence and presenting value. I even got a chance to sell cars and learn value in personal branding and catering to my local community. More importantly 🚨 Building a business within a business! With hard work my pay could be as high as I put my mind to. Most importantly the value in knowing your audience and the sucess in being able to adapt to different personalities. More importantly… The importance of the attention to the details From there on out I’ve been in the independent repair side and it’s fun getting to know all different brand vehicles, what the quirks are and how to better train and advise on repairs. I am Honored to help lead and the team inspires me to be better and do better everyday. It’s all about the people that makes this profession so great! Unlike a 4 year degree where they make you pick a major. This industry allows so many different positions to try and choose from. Not to mention the unlimited opportunity for growth and endless learning. We all agree it has its troubles, we all committed to work on changing. Let’s all keep spreading the word of all the great opportunities 😊 What different roles have you all worked in?
