"Probabilistic estimates do not approximate judgment understand uncertainty". I would have liked to be able to assist to this presentation and surely interesting discussions. Quantification is the 'grail' for some safety people but how to mesure / quantify unknown, emerging behaviours or uncertainty? How representative can figures be at some complex system level into a complex moving environment and with regard to changing usage scenarios? It's important to chalenge the representativness of what we do as safety studies.

Thanks to Missy Cummings for a great presentation this morning at the Software Certification Consortium meeting in Annapolis! Her talk on "Lessons Learned in Regulating Self Driving Cars" was highly relevant to our discussions on safety assurance including issues with safe & secure remote operation of safety-critical systems.

This is the Moose Test, and strangely, many new cars are failing it. Either rolling up on two wheels, spinning, understeering straight on - or rolling over completely. The significance of this test lies in its ability to simulate real-world driving scenarios, where drivers instinctively swerve to avoid an obstacle and then abruptly steer back into their lane without braking. While a trained driver might handle the situation with ease, many everyday drivers struggle with basic maneuvers, making this a realistic and effective test of driving skills.

here's a new creative thinking idea Self driving car theory The saying that nothing can be perfect is a true fact and the same with the car band computer like every living thing It will make mistakes. As safe as we can get with a self driving car is as safe as a human driver. We can still make self driving cars but they’re not going to be safer than a human driving. They will operate the same as human driver operate to the vehicles best we can make it. Their made by us humans part of how us humans operate is by making mistakes. With out knowing until after it happens so how else will they know any better? We may still need them for people who cant drive cuz disabled. So we can look around with out needing to focus on the road and we can drink behind the wheel that pretty much the only safety update to make car the drive them self safer than a human driving. They won’t be safer by much.
