Duncan is thriving at Lucivero Plumbing! Despite being a qualified plumber, Duncan had been unemployed since 2019 and was secretly struggling with addiction and mental health issues. Duncan sought support from Workskil Australia. His Employment Coach provided ongoing guidance, assisting with appointments, Allied Health activities, and referrals to external drug and alcohol counselling. After rebuilding his confidence and working on himself, Duncan began attending job expos and completed First Aid training. He was quickly offered a local position with Lucivero Plumbing in Port Pirie, SA. Duncan was offered ongoing employment on the spot and started the following week. Now employed since August 2024, Duncan is loving his new role and the mix of indoor/outdoor and physical work he gets to do. "I'm really happy with Duncan and the assistance and support that Workskil Australia has provided," says Employer Jack Lucivero (pictured on the left with Duncan). Congratulations Duncan! You’re smashing it. #EmploymentServices #MentalHealth #SecondChances #SuccessStory

Mental First Aid Officers MFAO After recently completing a certificate iv in Workplace, Health and Safety. I learnt how to think about safety differently and how to make improvements however minor they maybe. One of the topics I was assigned was Psychosocial Risks. So I though I would share a little what I learnt. In case any one was not aware an amendment was made to update the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 on 1 April 2023. This provided more clarify on what Psychosocial Risks is, the duties of a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) and what to consider in implementing controls. Many state Safety authorities have developed Code of Practice and in my home state of Queensland you can find a copy from https://lnkd.in/gAt4f3iX Many work places are now recognising Psychosocial Hazards and introducing Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA). However many MFAO are not compensated for these skills/services which in some areas of the workplace may be used more often then General first aid in which most workplace provides an allowance. Next time you review your Enterprise Bargining Agreement or Safety policy/procedure think about the MHFA. Maybe even speak with your training providers to see if they offer a combined Provide First Aid and Mental First Aid Course. Stats from Safe Work Australia also indication Mental health conditions had an 50% increase in proportion of serious claim from 2014-15 and in 2020-21 accounted for 9.3% of serious claims in 20-21 with a median time lost of 30.7 working weeks per and approx $55K per serious claim vs 6.2 working weeks and approx $14K for physical injuries and diseases. https://lnkd.in/g7mdrmyW Additional info https://lnkd.in/gJa3kf_e

Do you have a first aid kit in your office that is correctly maintained? Where am I going with this you might be asking ? Bear with me ....... You know of course, that employers have a duty of care responsibility to their employees for both physical and psychological safety. I spent last weekend in Liverpool, UK at the scattering of my Mum’s ashes on what would have been her 100th birthday. It was a happy/sad moment but a lovely opportunity for the Dalton gang to get together. I had an interesting chat with my nephew Harry Dalton who is part of Dalton Safety Ltd a safety products company, set up by my brother, Mike Harry told me that when he visits clients he finds in many cases businesses either don’t have a first aid box, or the contents are out of date. It got me thinking if organisations can't be bothered to keep band aids, what are the implications for psychosocial safety? This is different from psychological safety 🩹 Psychological safety is about feeling safe to share thoughts and concerns without fear, while 🩹 Psychosocial safety encompasses the broader environment that supports mental, emotional, and physical health at work. It's the foundation needed for psychological safety. Read more about the components of psychosocial safety and psychosocial hazards. https://lnkd.in/d3HFNxBG Is there a connection between low level disregard for the physical safety of employees and their mental and emotional health? Important Update: Changes to First Aid Regulations 1981 Now Include Mental Health The First Aid Regulations 1981 have recently been updated to reflect the growing recognition of mental health in the workplace. The changes emphasize that mental health is as important as physical health, and employers are now required to consider both when assessing their first aid needs. This update is a significant step forward, ensuring that mental health is given the attention it deserves. Employers should now integrate mental health support into their first aid policies, including providing training for mental health first aiders and creating a supportive environment for employees. #MentalHealth #FirstAid #WorkplaceWellbeing #RegulationUpdate

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed approach that is built on the concept of human resilience. PFA aims to reduce stress symptoms and assist in a healthy recovery following a traumatic event, natural disaster, public health emergency, or even a personal crisis. It empowers the individual by supporting strengths and encouraging existing coping skills. It also provides connections to natural support networks, and referrals to professional services when needed. Psychological First Aid is tool that each of us can use to reduce our stress level. By understanding your stress reactions and utilizing Psychological First Aid principles, you can enhance resilience in yourself, your family, workplace, and community.

I recently completed the Psychological First Aid course offered by the UK Health Security Agency, and it was an eye-opening experience. 🌟 The course deepened my understanding of what Psychological First Aid truly entails and its importance in supporting individuals during crises. I learned how to identify those who might need this kind of support and how to approach them effectively, while also exploring ways to maintain my own well-being and that of my peers in challenging situations. This experience has inspired me to delve further into the field of psychosocial support and its application in different contexts. #PsychologicalFirstAid #MentalHealthSupport #UKHealthSecurityAgency #CrisisManagement #PsychosocialSupport #MentalHealthAwareness #PersonalGrowth #WellBeing #EmotionalSupport #LearningExperience
