It’s September already! This is the time of year when job seekers take year-end bonuses into account when timing their career moves. Law firms pay associate bonuses not only to incentivize excellent performance and high productivity, but also to entice lawyers to join them and stay. Firms may pay discretionary bonuses predicated on excellent associate work and strong financial performance of the firm, hours bonuses requiring a minimum number of annual billable hours for any bonus eligibility or an increase in compensation by a set dollar amount for annual hours billed over a specified minimum, or signing bonuses to sweeten an offer of employment and seal the deal. While bonuses certainly can fatten your wallet, contribute to your job satisfaction, and keep you on the job and working hard, they're designed primarily to benefit the firm, not you. When it comes to worker retention, they can be effective. But, don’t let bonuses hamper your career move. This week’s posts will discuss how potential bonuses should, or should not, enter into your job search calculus. Are you staying in your current position primarily to collect a year-end bonus? #jobsearchtips #jobsearching #lawjobs #legaljobs #legalrecruiting For more insights into job search strategies, the legal industry, and the California legal job market, follow SeltzerFontaine LLC, and connect with me and ring the 🔔 at Valerie Fontaine.

My three years working with UF's Graduate Tax Program taught me a very important lesson: it's very good to be a foreign-educated Tax LL.M. in one of the leading programs! As foreign-educated LL.M. students who took part in the major tax LL.M. hiring fairs (TARE and TIP) finalize their post-employment plans, I recommend prospective LL.M. applicants with tax backgrounds/interests reach out to their networks to learn why these programs are so unique in the LL.M. space. It's also why I tend to prefer Specialized LL.M. programs to General LL.M. programs (with three key exception categories), especially when the Specialized LL.M. is (1) in an area that has demand for LL.M. hiring; (2) can still allow you to sit for a state bar exam; and (3) has a well-known reputation among Americans with J.D. degrees who are in positions to hire.

Is my 7 weeks severance fair after being let go without cause from 1.25-year finance job at 28? #SeverancePackage #EmploymentLaw #OntarioEmployment Hey everyone, so I got the ol' "yeet" today without cause after working at my finance job for 1 year and 3 months. They offered me 4 weeks of pay in lieu along with 3 weeks conditional on signing an agreement to not pursue any legal action. I'm curious if this is reasonable or if I should push for more 🤔. Here are some factors to consider: -... Source: https://lnkd.in/gudUUkYp #mymetric360

Today, as I was heading home after a workday, stuck in a massive traffic jam, a beautiful memory came to mind—a memory that still influences the type of professional I chose to be and that I would like to share here. When I was interviewing for my previous job, for an internship position in tax law, the recruiter asked me what services I was qualified to perform and what my responsibilities had been in my previous roles. When I mentioned that I had over six years of experience in accounting, specifically in the tax field, she responded that it wasn't exactly the same and that I didn't have much practical legal experience (at that time). I replied, 'Yes, I understand, but I am a quick learner.' Two days later, I received a call from the firm saying that I was hired (though, due to the pandemic, the internship only lasted six months). After hanging up the phone, I called my mom to share the news, and she asked me, 'Aren't you scared because you only know a quarter of the job?' I responded, 'Mom, it’s okay that I don’t know everything... but that’s great because it means I have the chance to learn.' Over time, as I started at the company, I was able to learn various procedures in both financial and legal fields, as well as accounting. For instance, I learned how to conduct tax credit assessments for different companies. I now like to say that 'The unknown excites me' because it gives me the opportunity to learn more each day and to always be evolving. #CareerJourney #ProfessionalGrowth #LearningAndDevelopment #CareerAdvice #ProfessionalDevelopment

Embrace Opportunity: The New Financial Year Boosts the Legal Job Market! After a long Easter Weekend, we step into a fresh financial year! The new financial year always brings a surge to the labour market on both Employer and Employee sides. Here are brief reasons why: For the Employer: With the start of a new fiscal year, law firms review their budgets and allocate resources strategically. With teams having refreshed recruitment budgets, this can mean new openings, expansions, and investments in talent. For the Employee: The new financial year often brings with it a host of promotions as we pass appraisal season. People often consider moving jobs when they see others being promoted, as it prompts reflection on their own career trajectory and desire for advancement. Feeling undervalued or recognizing a mismatch in opportunities may drive individuals to seek new roles where their skills are recognized and there's room for growth. In essence, the new financial year injects vitality into the job market with an expected upturn in both roles available and candidates looking for a change. As we all well know, the job market is cyclical in nature. Whether you're a Senior Associate or Partner looking to explore new horizons, or a Trainee solicitor looking for NQ roles, it’s worth exploring opportunities that the new financial year brings. ‘Leaving it until summer’, could be a regrettable outlook. #NewFinancialYear #JobMarket

Last week I had the opportunity to volunteer at Woodbridge Road Academy and showcase interviewing skills to the students alongside Fiona Sturges and Hasina Choudhury. One question raised by a student there stood out to me. “What if I can’t get any work experience related to the job?” I spent this weekend helping my family to pick the grape harvest, a job that i’ve done for many years and has taken up a lot of my time! It got me thinking about my own experience and Hasina’s reply to the question. All experience matters, whether you're working a part-time job, focusing on your education, or contributing to a family business. Each of these experiences develops skills that are highly transferable to a legal career. When I approached Thompson Smith and Puxon in the hopes of becoming a #TSPtrainee, I had come straight out of university with a CV that mainly contained academic achievements, part-time jobs and experience in the family businesses. There was very little legal experience. But all of these skills are transferable. Helping the family business or working part time jobs still gives you vital skills. Even if your job doesn’t seem related to law, the core skills you’re building in client communication, negotiation, deadlines or even leadership are often the very qualities law firms look for. It’s all about how you showcase those experiences to your potential employer and apply them to the legal context. If you’re feeling uncertain about not having the "right" legal experience, remember that it’s not just about where you’ve worked, but how you can use the skills you’ve gained to succeed in the career you want. #TSPtrainee #TrainingContract #TSPLegal
