🚨 New Employment Rights Bill: Shaping the Future of Hybrid Work in the UK 🚨 Next week, the Labour Government will introduce its Employment Rights Bill, which could reshape work as we know it. Among other things: ✅ It will require employers accommodate flexible work requests unless "not reasonably practicable." ✅ Businesses will be encouraged to set boundaries for after-hours communication. While some in the private sector may push back, research consistently debunks concerns about hybrid working. I detail this work and counter-arguments in a Forbes column (link in comments). 🔍 There is no negative impact of hybrid working on performance, with job satisfaction rising 🔍 Flexibility reduces quit rates and attracts talent. 🔍 Thoughtfully planned office days can mitigate challenges around innovation and collaboration. Hybrid working isn't just a trend—it can be a competitive advantage if adequately regulated. 😇 In fact I called for the right to flexible work to be enshrined in law in 2021 in another Forbes column. The Conservatives were not very interested! 👉 Flexibility should be *managed* not resisted. The bill is a welcome step forward, but it will face resistance from firms stuck in traditional models. If you ask me, this RTO plan set to begin in January will probably never take off—it's too costly and intrusive for both the company and its employees. While it this far has lookd like a veiled layoff strategy aimed at positioning Amazon for AI investments, the costs must far outweigh the benefits. A survey of 2,585 Amazon employees on Blind revealed that 73% are considering looking for new job opportunities after the RTO announcement. 80% of respondents know colleagues who are also contemplating leaving due to the policy change, with many feeling that this move undermines morale and disproportionately affects parents and caregivers reliant on flexibility. According to Glassdoor, 74% of Amazon workers are reevaluating their career paths, either within or outside the company. While this RTO may seem like a subtle way to reduce headcount, the negative impact on retention and morale could severely backfire. An internal survey reported by Fortune found that employees are "strongly dissatisfied" with the new policy. With over 30,000 members in a "remote advocacy" group on Slack, resistance is clear. Employees are pushing back, citing disruption to their work-life balance and loss of trust in leadership. At a time when companies need to retain top talent to fuel AI transformation, enforcing an RTO mandate risks losing the very people who drive innovation. The future of work is hybrid, and forcing outdated models won’t lead to success—it will only create unnecessary friction. #FutureOfWork Link in comments
