As the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting 2025 in Davos concludes, here are the key highlights for those that are time poor and wanted a summary of this year's gathering: Theme and Participation The meeting convened under the theme "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age," bringing together around 3,000 leaders from over 130 countries, including 60 heads of state and government. This diverse participation ensured a wide range of perspectives on global challenges and opportunities. Economic Outlook Global growth is projected to remain steady at 3.3% in 2025 and 2026, slightly below the historical average. Inflation is expected to decrease, allowing for normalisation of monetary policy. However, concerns were raised about soaring public debt levels, with the world accumulating about $100 trillion in public debt. Technology and Innovation Emerging technologies, particularly AI, were a central focus. Discussions centered on AI's applications, investment, and development, with tangible examples of progress in manufacturing, decarbonisation, and healthcare. Africa's Potential African leaders highlighted the continent's demographic dividend, with 60% of its population under 25. They emphasised Africa's spirit of innovation and its growing role in shaping international affairs. Climate and Sustainability Major climate-related initiatives were launched, including the Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor. Leaders also discussed the alarming statistic that up to 40% of the planet's land has already been degraded, emphasising the urgent need for environmental protection. Geopolitics and Security Geopolitical tensions were a key topic, with discussions on conflict resolution and diplomacy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for increased defense spending in Europe, suggesting up to 5% of GDP. As we reflect on Davos 2025, it's clear that collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth remain at the forefront of global priorities. The event remains as a controversial gathering in many respects. However, if we look past this point it is clear that the forum offers an opportunity to debate some of the world's most pressing topics. Beyond AI are the needs of the planet for peace, growth, true human connections and nature. Here I would like to refer to the concept of “Deus ex machina”: Technologies are tools not means. AI can indeed help progress but they have to be used wisely with common sense for the common good. Key Discussions: • Water at a Tipping Point: A session titled “Water at a Tipping Point” highlighted the alarming trajectory of global water systems. Experts noted that within five years, half of the world’s population could face water stress, threatening productivity, public health, and food security, and putting $1.6 trillion in assets at risk. The session emphasized leveraging technology, governance, and financial innovations to manage and prevent water crises. • Aquapreneur Innovation Initiative: The collaboration between UpLink and HCL Group’s Aquapreneur Innovation Initiative was showcased as a model for empowering early-stage innovators. This initiative aims to create an ecosystem that supports ‘Aquapreneurs’ in scaling breakthrough technologies to transform water management, addressing pollution, and promoting sustainable practices. • International Collaboration for Water Security in Ukraine: The Ukraine Water Public Private Partnership (UWP3), launched by the Netherlands Water Partnership in 2023, was discussed as a blueprint for rebuilding water infrastructure in conflict-affected regions. This initiative focuses on cross-national, public-private cooperation to evaluate, analyze, and address the challenges in Ukraine’s water sector through resource-sharing and strategic project partnerships. Conclusions: The WEF 2025 underscored the urgency of addressing water scarcity through collaborative efforts. Key takeaways include: • Integrated Approaches: Combining technological innovation, effective governance, and financial investment is essential to manage water resources sustainably. • Support for Innovation: Empowering entrepreneurs and innovators (‘Aquapreneurs’) is crucial for developing and implementing solutions to water challenges. • Global Collaboration: International partnerships, exemplified by initiatives like UWP3, are vital for addressing water security, especially in regions facing infrastructural challenges. These discussions and initiatives reflect a growing recognition of water security as a pivotal issue requiring immediate and coordinated action.

We are entering an interesting year ahead. A significant focus was on the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies across various sectors. 💡

A sustainable, wealthier, more HUMAN future for all is possible if we can put our selfishness behind us and leverage the tools we have created with a view to the long term. Not that the people inside the bubble are aware of that. "We need to be preparing kids for the world they are inheriting. We need to *change* schools, not change kids!"
