Tech companies' emissions are on the rise as they compete to develop AI models, which require energy-intensive training. Michael Birtwistle, associate director at the Ada Lovelace Institute, a London-based AI policy research institute, tells Sustainable Views that greater reporting and transparency of tech companies' environmental impact is needed. Michael Khoo, director of non-profit Friends of the Earth’s climate disinformation programme agrees. "It’s outrageous that these companies are saying, on one hand, that they’re going to save the planet with AI, but with their front foot doing the exact opposite," he says. What I want to point out ... One source of energy is almost untouched, in many states in the US; Geothermal energy. It can be used for homes, businesses, and data centers. Icelandic companies can help, through the whole geothermal supply chain. A deep and unique know-how and experience is what Iceland has to offer. 💡 This article underscores “#AI's potential to address pressing #challenges like climate change aligning with #national #objectives”. ✍ If anyone were to ask me which part of this sentence is my favorite, I would undoubtedly say 'national objectives.' I find that very few people pay enough attention to this crucial aspect. When I read news about AI applications, I almost always see AI being used for sustainability concepts. While it's true that we must respect the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), it doesn't mean that we should only focus on sustainable initiatives. I believe it would be better if we considered initiatives in two categories, sustainable or unsustainable. If they are sustainable, we should improve them; if they are not, we should modify them. Hence, AI solutions for sustainability depend on the geographic area they are supposed to sustain and are not the same for all countries.
